Location: Darboy USA | Anyone been out hitting the reefs or shorelines for walleye yet? I'm anxiously awaiting on the fish to come back to the UR lakes, I don't have the patience to fish the run on the river, too many knuckleheads.
Will be taking the boat out for the first time tonite just to run the cobwebs out, might throw a few jigs on the east shore rocks to see if me and the boys can pick up an eye or 2. Any reports from the big lake would be appreciated.

Location: Menasha, WI | Fished west side channels yesterday. Caught well over 100+ fish, mostly crappies, but some gills, perch, and even some largemouth. Too bad only 10 were worthy to make it into the basket. Trolled some shorelines as a I moved between channels but didn't get bit. Lot's a green weeds made it through the winter. It's going to be thick out there this year. |

Location: Darboy USA | Ran the boat and got the bugs out, all went well. Didn't pitch any jigs, but fished a creek opening with the boys and caught some smaller crappies, 7-9". Looked like a bunch of shad were spawning as well in there, tons of splashing going on and quite a few of them swimming up on top of the surface. |

Location: Menasha, WI | I fished an Upper Lake today. Started out hot, put a 19" and a 20" in the boat within 45 minutes (along with a perch and a half a dozen white bass). Once the sun came out it shut off; 2 more hours passed before I got a 3rd eye -- a nice 24" girl spawned out girl that went back. Tried a bunch of combos but all eyes came on a Firetiger Flicker Shad 20' back at 1.5 mph. |

Location: Menasha, WI | Only had a few hours tonight, so I stayed close to home and fished the NW corner of Bago. Trolled shorelines 4'-7'. No eyes but 6 decent smallies and HUGE sheephead, I've caught few that big over the years but never multiple 8#-12# fish on the same outing. It was actually kind of fun. |

Nope it was the bass cat and that sucka can GO. lol Ralph. |

| Went to the upper lakes on friday and spent the day trolling. We caught walleyes, a northern , white bass, sheephead, a perch and a few crappies. Planned on doing jigging and slip bobbering thing but the trolling was so good we decided to not do that. Ended up with a limit of nice eating walleyes 13-18 inches. ALL of the walleyes were spawned out but were very well fed after spawing based on the fat on them when we cleaned them. Amazing thing happened, well something that I haven't had happen before. Bought a few new crankbaits that I thought would produce which usually isnt the case when buying what I would think would be a new "hot bait". But...in fact it was...90% of the fish came on that one bait. Just hope it continues to produce like that.
Heard from numerous others who were out in various places across the lakes and up river area who did just as well as we did and better on friday.
Good luck and let those big ones go!! |

| Spent friday morning on the upper lakes again and did very well. After trolling in various areas and switching baits and colors, we found them and what they wanted. Brought home a 2 man limit of walleyes to make me fatter than I already am. Released 8 fish that were over 19 1/2 biggest being 22in. Very windy. My eyes and face are wind burned but it was worth it. Fished for 5 hours.
Time to make some fries and a brandy 'ol fashioned!
Let the big ones go!! |

| Trolled Poygan Saturday 4-14. Very slow for me. 3 white bass. Tried Flicker Shads, Salmos, Nils Masters and Raps.......could't get an eye! Weather was nice though. Fairly light (no where as stiff as the weather report suggested it would be) SW wind and it was 71 when we got off the water. |

Location: Darboy USA | Was up on UR lakes as well yesterday. We did ok, trolled from 2-7 and pulled an 18, 19, 27.5" hog!! Biggest fish ive seen on the Bago system personally, easily 7 lbs, maybe more. All fat and muscle as she was post spawn. Few sheeps, nice 13.5" crappie, catfish and lost another eye as well. Tried about everything and bright colored flickers, shad raps and tsticks did the eyes in. Hopin it will only get better with time, really had to cover water just to get what we did.

Location: Menasha, WI | Got out a couple of times over the weekend on the big lake. Did great Friday drifting the reefs getting 9 eyes from 17"-22". Could only scrape up a single 20" eye on Sunday. The drop in surface temperature from Friday to Sunday was 5-6 degrees, so the tough bite Sunday wasn't too surprising.
With the predicted temps this week, the water temp should rise nicely and I think the bite is going to take off. In my 10 years fishing Bago, I've never caught so many eyes on the main lake in April -- the bite is typical of late May. Not only that, I've caught about 3 times as many eyes as sheephead recently, but I'm sure the goats will start biting too with the warm up.

| If you have any baits that work good in chocolate milk, now's the time to pull them out. Wow did we get the rain last night.
The upper lakes will be filthy this weekend...every feeder creek/river is overflowed with mud, and more rain to come tonight. Winds at 10+ mph forecasted through Monday won't help either. |

Try driving around Oshkosh this morning. I could've used my boat to get through some of the flooded areas on Cty A.

| Thanks for the help, Tiller..
Suppose I have a decision to make; fish a local lake down here in SE WI and see if we can jig some up, or make the trip up and drag around the brightest stuff we've got. Leaning towards my neck of the woods down here, plus if it gets boring I can raise my buddies excitement level by making them musky fish for an hour or two |

If you're thinking about tomorrow, I think you'll be OK. The lake has been calm all day and looks like it will be through the night. Other than some of the inlet areas, I think it should settle out fairly quickly. |

| Okay, I'm all sorts of mixed feelings on this one. I'm less stressed about where to fish during a tourney than I am about doing a walleye trip with a couple buddies for fun, haha It's rare these days that these two good friends and I have a day where we three can go on an adventure like we used to before families, careers and homes gave us all a reality check. I saw Vikings post last night and since I'm already on the fence, I started siding more towards the Winne trip, and still now I'm thinking this way. One thing that is concerning to me is that I've never fished Winne, neither have the guys. I know there are reefs out there and that a big lake like that can get real nasty real quick,; being that I've never navigated those waters I'm going to rely on electronics and a hotspots contoured lake map to get around if we do, in fact, make the trip out. One thing is certain and something I've learned in all my years chasing ski's is that fish have to eat.. Water color, stained or not, they have to eat. That said, if it's the weather that kicks our @$$, I'm sure there are plenty of taverns to visit in the area
I've got a couple handfuls of #5 flicker shads, several boards and rods, room in the boat for a cooler and time to kill.. I'm still leaning towards Winne. Thanks for the updates on the water conditions, you guys, this is good stuff and beats the heck out of LL. Keep 'em coming if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to keep as close of tabs as I can on the clarity and conditions out there leading up to Sunday. |

The winds? I'm seeing 10-15 MPH's on the Weather Channel right now and in the forecast for next couple days. Looking like 50% chance of scattered T-storms Saturday and 60% on Sunday. Rain won't melt me or my boat.. but wind - what's "scary" windage for Winne, I know it's big water. |

In general anything over 20mph is tough. But 'scary' wind speed is relative to where you fish and what direction the wind is from. For instance, a 12-14 mph East wind can make the west side pretty scary. Looking at the forecast for E winds at 12-15mph all weekend, fishing from the east side might not be too bad. |

| Thanks for the advice, I'll stick to the lee side, and by the sounds of it, I'll probably find the best clarity along the East shore, anyways. Are there any reefs that come up quick with little warning out there or is everything pretty adequately marked with boueys? |

Location: Berlin | Definitely stick to the east shore. Tons of structure on the northern half. Water will be clearer. Personally I would just long line Salmo's until I found some fish then work them however you like. You should not have any trouble catching fish over there. The west side will be the dead sea. The rivers are dumping mud out. Upper lakes looks like a glass of Nestle Quik.
As for navigation, you will not have any problems. Dont sweat it, just go fishing. |

| Nice, sounds good gents. Just piucked up a mess of #5 flicker shads in Clown, Chartreuse/Pearl, Firetiger, Black/Orange Belly and speckled shiner color and I've got some Salmos and Shad Raps to boot. I've got 4 boards and line counter combos, so we'll troll around and see what gives. Game plan will be 12-14' of water, two boards out on each side and 25' of line out on furthest starboard side, increase 5-10' more line on each board coming across. I'll run to flat lines, too, and try to cover all the depths to start and if we pop a couple I'll adjust from there. Figure 2 mph trolling speed to keep those baits from rolling too bad..
I've got the lake map and good electronics, so we'll do our best to read the structure and keep the baits in the strike zone. Hopefully I've got the right ideas here, but that will be part of the fun of the adventure. I'll be sure to touch base on Monday with a report out and hopefully some pictures. After Sunday it will be back to the musky hunts, but this should be fun.
Thanks again for the help, guys, and please, keep the reports on the conditions coming - it's very useful to folks looking to make the drive.

| Thanks for all the help guys, I'm glad we committed and gave it a try. Not bad for our first time on this water. The strong winds out of the east couldn't have made for a more perfect reason to fish the East side of the lake given the mudded up waters along the West shores. We didn't have our second board out before we hit our first eye. After our second rod was down we pinged another, then another. In the first 3 hours we caught 3 walleye up to 20", 3 white bass and a drum... and then the storms came.
We had lunch at a bar & grill at 11 and waited out the lightening and buckets of rain before venturing back out into the wind. Lesson learned - fishing the lee side of the lake doesn't mean calm waters, it just means calmer than the other side, lol. No problem though, waves don't scare me - at least not these waves; they were managable. After three more ours of trolling, we put three more 20" eyes into the livewell and caught a couple saugers up to 17".
What a trip! Thanks again everyone for the updates on conditions and tips. Back to musky for a while for this guy, but we'll get back to Bago again I'm sure. Good luck out there!
EDIT: We've all heard of "pink in morning, sailor take warning!" Well...

| Way to go Sam! You just never know what to expect when you come to Winnebago. All I can say is that this year the walleyes have been VERY cooperative for anyone who goes out. Trolling, slip biobbering, jigging and drifting ...all of it is working to catch some nice walleyes. AND..it doesnt seem to matter where you go in the system..they seem to be EVERYWHERE!!! |

| Has anyone tried trolling the mud in winnebago yet? I know it seems kinda early but this spring everything seems to be ahead. I know that there are fish along the shorelines reefs and rocks but there are also a lot of boats in there as well.
I was thinking of trying the mud if I'm able to get out in the next week or so. What do you guys think? Is it worth the time or no? Cranks or Spinners? |

Location: Manawa Wiscowsin | Poygan was hot for the last couple of weeks in the area of the old Duck Inn. It shut off Saturday (5/6/12). We trolled harnesses for an hour without a hit. A buddy called from Winneconne. He had picked up a 26" and a 27" eye and also had a limit of eaters. The bite had eased by the time we arrived but the three of us did limit out on eaters and released five small ones. We also picked up a couple of slab white bass and a nice size catfish. Only one sheep.
One of the eyes was bad. There were no outward signs but when it was filleted the meat was off color and stank. This is the first time I have seen this. Has anyone else? Ideas? |

Location: Freedom, WI | Fishing has been rock solid on Poygan for the past 2-3 weeks, despite all the rain! The fish seem to be all over and looking for food! We have cleaned 20 Walleyes in the past 3 weeks and have yet to find a minnow in their stomachs!
All of our fish have been caught trolling crankbaits in 6-8 feet of water going 1.5-2.0 mph. We have been increasing our trolling speed as the waters warm. Lure selection hasn't been that important, as we have caught fish on Salmos, Shad Raps, Flicker Shads, and even Ripshads! Color has been key, and has been changing on a daily basis. Starting with a good variety of colors and fine tuning throughout the day has been working for us. One day its firetiger, the next purpledescent, so keep switching until the fish tell you what they want!

Tons of 5"-6" crappies tonight, too. I can't wait until this year class matures. |

Location: Menasha, WI | Was out yesterday from 3-6pm. Planned to start in an area on the north end that has been producing well, but I got out there to find a massive, thick slick of blue-green algae. Surface temp was 85 and flat calm.
Moved south a couple of miles and pulled harnesses. Just after I hit a double, the wind went from zero-to-20mph before I could reposition for another pass. Motored back to the north end -- the wind had broken up the algae slick and I was able to find a few more moving parallel to the north shore in 15'.
Fish seem to be really tight to the bottom. Purple Cisco Blades carried the day again. |

| I was out from the river in Oshkosh today, scum covered and gross would describe the water today. I started in 17 feet of water and headed north toward Garlic Island. My last pole I threw out was a long line 25 feet behind the boat with a # 5 Chartreuse Pearl Flicker Shad for White Bass. To my surprise, a 23 inch Walleye inhaled the bait. Thinking this was a fluke, I threw it back out 25 feet behind the board and within minutes, I had a second 20 inch Walleye. I quickly reset all my lines with #5 Pearl Flickers, 25 back and over the next 90 minutes caught and released an additional 12 Walleyes all over 20 inches. The water was so gross that I CPRed all the fish. Everything including my baits, boards, line, net and boat were covered in green slime and flies.
Fished for an additional 5 hours in the area and could not catch a Walleye. Very weird experience.

Location: Menasha, WI | Lots of dead fish in the Bago, too. Probably looks whole lot worse than it is. Mostly smaller fish, perch and rock bass, but I did see some decent eyes floating as well. The algae is by far the worse I've seen it in my 10 years living here -- and we've still got 6-8 weeks of summer. The wind the other evening along with the breezes of the last couple of days have helped, but I'm sure it'll be back in full force.

Location: Menasha, WI | Sharing from elsewhere:
Lake Winnebago Anglers,
I have a request of you to aid in the management of our great fishery. We are currently conducting a limited creel survey of anglers, and we need your cooperation to get the best information we can to manage the fishery. During July, August and September, we will have creel clerks at randomly selected landings and days around Lake Winnebago asking anglers how long they were fishing, what they were fishing for, what they caught and what they kept. We are primarily interested in perch and walleye, but are also collecting data on other species as well. We need to measure and determine the sex of a sample of your perch and walleye to obtain a sexed length distribution of the harvest and percent females and males. This is important management information that we have not collected in a long time. While this is not a full blown creel survey, it will give us insights into what anglers are actually harvesting.
To get these sexed data, we need to cut into some of your fish to examine the gonads. While I realize that this will cause you a slight delay and may affect how you normally process your fish, I ask that you cooperate with the survey and allow us to get this critical management information.
You may be curious as to the reason we are interested in collecting this information, and that’s a fair question. In a nutshell, we are curious as to why we don’t see larger numbers of 9 – 12 inch perch in the system. Since 2001, we have seen perch year classes that are 4 – 10 times larger than those observed in the previous decade and a half, yet we rarely see perch larger than 9 inches during our community assessment trawling. In addition, this past spring, we set fyke nets to assess the size structure of spawning adult perch. The nets were packed with perch, sometimes >1400 per net, but 97% of these fish were less than 9” in length. We’ve documented huge year classes of yellow perch from 2004 – 07 from trawling, but these year classes have not produced good numbers of jumbo perch, which we should be seeing by now.
Some of you may jump to the conclusion that this is the first step in reducing the bag limit for perch, but this is not the case. Rather, we are collecting data to understand more about the dynamics of the perch and walleye fisheries. After we’ve collected and analyzed the data we will hold public meetings with anglers to discuss the results of our survey and together, determine the best management approach for the Winnebago system as we have always done in the past.
So please, be patient and cooperate with the creel clerks and allow us to get this important information for the best management of our great system. Thank you.

| walleye spawn sucess for 2012 was "non existant" reports say. KEEP THAT IN MIND as you venture out next year as the exploitation rates were very high also!
Good Luck

| Totally agree tyee! The Wisconsin meat hogs need to realize its OK not keep a limit every time out. I personally kept less than 1 out of 10 fish I caught this year and didn't keep a single fish the month of June...It was actually kind of nice to just go fishing and not worrying about how many were in the box or cleaning fish when I got home.
It's tough to expect culture change I suppose, but wishful thinking. |
