| Okay just a question, why does everybody go witth the 9hp catagory? The reason I ask is everybody is trying to slow down to get the right speed, especially pulling cranks,etc.
I have an 18ft crestliner, I am thinking of putting a honda 5 hp(feel free to give me your 2 cents:) Why the 5 and not the 9
1. lighter/ fuel economy
2. at idle it won't push the boat to fast on calm days, on ruff days crank her up
3. I live in Canada(SK), my world is northern lakes. no large bodies of water like the great lakes, etc.
I am not expert, just looking to recieve some feed back.....from the experts:)

| There is nothing wrong with 5hp, most of the 9.9 are designed to used as kicker with added features like dual thrust props, larger diameter low pitch props, power stow, centering straps, and a 9.9 will push up to 21' boat with ease. That is the market. You can back troll with one of these kickers also. |

Location: Waukesha Wisconsin | A honds 5 will work just fine for your needs. Some of us go the other extremes. I have a 15hp on my 620 Ranger. Works very nice for a backup for a 14 foot aluminum. |

| funny you bring up the 15hp, My dad said mount a 15hp if my big merc goes down he won't need to paddle!!:) |

| all good info... using the kicker for another boat, rentals, etc. great idea. getting back in an emergency also good. gotta ask yourself, am I gonna leave the kicker on there? bigger 15 might be overkill but if he isn't leaving it on there 24/7 then might be an option... right now I'm scrounging the want ads for anything cheap... kicker and maybe adding a small tin boat in the future... |

| Nothing wrong with a 5 hp Honda, it will work just fine. Most of the 9.9 motors are twin cylinder and will run smoother than the 5 which is a single cylinder. The 9.9 motors that are made for kicker usage have mounts and sideplates that will (should) stand up to rough water. If you go with that 5hp Honda you will need to do something to keep it from bouncing around when running your main engine in rough water and while trailering. Otherwise you will destroy the mounting brackets. Simply locking it in the up position is not enough. |
