I have structure scan, but in the last couple of weeks, it has not been working correctly on either of my HDS units. What happens is that it will be working fine and then all of sudden change where the depth is now shown as 2' instead of 30'. It will continue for a while (can be 1-60 minutes), then it goes back correctly. It will keep doing this a lot over the course of the day and quite frustrating. Any suggestions?

How do you have it mounted? Is it losing signal at trolling speeds or high speeds?

It is mounted off the back of transom. It is doing this while drifting 0.5 mph in downscan.

I will look at mine when I get home, and get back to you.

Try and turn the contrast down a bit and try to put the depth in manuel mode to depth you at and see if problem persists.

I tried setting range manually, and that seems to help it from doing so often. However that defeats the purpose of having an unit that is supposed to have auto range. Contrast adjustments didn't help me at all. The other interesting issue that I noticed this weekend was that when the down scan picture was working fine, it would have a hard time keeping the readout set. In other words, the reading would be 30', then 1.8', then a dash, then cycling again. Strange considering there wasn't a variation in the scan.

Silly question is the transducer sitting level when its in the water? It is a very narrow cone angle front to back. Post some pics of the transducer.

I went through that as well. I have set the transducer level, both directions. I had some issues with the side scans and worked on that to make it work correctly. Like I said, everything was working fine. It is almost like there is a communication problem between LSS and both my HDS 7 and HDS 8. It is very odd. I have also been talking to a couple of shops in TC Metro, and they aren't sure what could be happening either.

I will try to get a pic and post it on here as well.

Have checked your connections? Maybe add some dielectric grease to them?

best thing to do is call lowrance and talk with the staff there. Your problem is either your structure scan transducer or you have a electronice issue with the structure scan(cold solder). I would try to get lowrance to send you a new x-ducer and try that first. Its disappointing to hassle with something like this because everything is mounted but unfortunatly electronics occasionally have these issue. good luck
