The field of competitors left the Park from the Lighthouse under perfect conditions this morning, and expectations are very high. Almost everyone we talked to has been putting limits in the boat easily, so 5 fish isn't the issue, it's who gets into a pod of mid 20" fish and tops the 6 fish limit with a kicker.

The mud is going, but so are the weeds and river bite, the reefs, and the sand. Trolling spinners, flies, and cranks, pitching jigs, twitching cranks, and every other technique out there are putting limits in the boat.

Winnebago has been one of the Top Walleye fishing destinations in the USA this year, and the Merc National will be a great showcase for the fishery.

The weigh in will begin this afternoon at the Lighthouse. The location of the weigh in and blast off had to be moved because of low water in the channels. It looks like it will be at least 2014's event before the channels can be dredged.

Watch for a full day one report immediately following the weigh in!

WalleyeFIRST Tournament Coverage is brought to you by Lund Boats and Mercury Outboards.

Matt 'Creeper' Jacobson and Jim Hughes won in 2009, with about 42 pounds. If they can repeat today's weight tomorrow, they just might beat that weight for the win. Matt told me Friday the wind and warmer weather would possibly disrupt the rest of the field's game plans. He was reluctant to say what he and Jim had planned...but it obviously worked, and 24.1 pounds as the result.

Brad Vetter and Jon Boedeker are one fish back at 22.72, and certainly in striking distance if Matt and Jim stumble. Tom Hoinacki and Brian Ball, perennial threats to take a win on 'Bago, are just a shade over 2 pounds back in third and also could easily win if their pattern holds. Rising and Rising are just 3 pounds back in fourth, and Jake LaPine and RJ Harwood Jr. are in fifth just a bit more than 3 pounds back rounding out the top five.

Tomorrow is going to be brutally hot, but according to several online weather sources, the winds are supposed to cap at 20 out of the South, listed as 10 to 20 on most and 17 on the Weather Channel. That's not much different from today's weather except for the additional 5 degrees of heat.

It's a shoot out.

Just under TWO TONS of walleyes were caught, more than doubling last year's total for day one.

The 9.9 Merc Kicker for day one goes to Team Number 30 Michael Lambrecht from Wrightstown, WI and Michael Docta from Fond du Lac, Wi with a 6.82 pound 'Eye.
