It's no secret that some lures are more popular on some lakes, bays or rivers than others. Many have become even more popular to specific places and even acquire a reputation on these bodies of water. I know for a fact that Storm Lures sold almost 3 times as many Hot-N-Tots to outlets near and around Saginaw Bay than to any other outlet. And even though they were popular and caught fish on many other bodies of water, they always had a nitch here on the bay. I guess the same could be said for Reef Runners on Lake Erie. Fact is, most places have their own lure favorites. The colors, sizes and techniques may vary when using them, but the local baitshop owner will always have a full supply of the local favorites.

So what lures do you see as being universal? That is, as popular on other bodies of water but still has the fish catching quality they enjoy on their own territory. And I suppose this whole subject could be up for debate concerning each lures popularity on varied bodies of water. But believe me, given the choice of a Reef Runner or Tot on the Saginaw Bay, I know what most would pick. And this post isn't intended to degrade any one lure manufacturer or their product.

I'll start it off by saying two lures came to my mind right away. The #11 or #13 Floating Rapala and the Daredevil Spoon, Red & White being the most popular. Both have been around for years and I've caught fish equally as well on both fishing many varied bodies of water in the US and Canada. And recently I've found new respect for the basic spoon. No real name brand, as I have caught virtually every species on them no matter who's brand name and what size. I could name a few more, but will leave room for debate and some other choices.

most rapala lures catch some fish for me esp. husky jerk and shad rap but they are rarely my first choice. i have a go to lure at each lake i fish at a particular time of year. i would use a rogue with a cold spring w. lake erie and a reef runner with an average water temp.-e. lake erie it would be renosky later in summer, etc. but i would say a husky jerk and shad rap will almost always catch walleye and a variety of other species if the fish are biting fairly well, but although i have boxes of pretty well every rapala type in variety of colours i rarely use them while i continue to drag them around most trips. happy holidays, steve

Crawler harnesses would come to mind as a universal bait, but not sure if that qualifies. Otherwise, the Daredevil, Mepps Spinners, and the Shad Rap would be my choices.

I have probably caught more eyes on a jig,but for hard baits,my first go to is the shad rap, followed closely by the thunderstick jr's.The hot'n'tot is also right up there. The last couple years on Bago, has been a learning experience for me,getting into the spinners, spoons, and crawler harnesses. However the best producing method,I've found,no matter where I'm at is still, pulling wolf river rigs, over the reefs,or mud flats, tipped with a leech, fly or crawler. If I only had one bait to use,in the boat, that would be my personal choice.Have a Merry Christmas, and if you THINK SPRING, it will happen!!...Hafe

This may sound like an add for Rapala but if i had one line of lures to choose from it would be the Rapala line. But not the new storm line they acquired.Or destroyed I should say.A wide variety of baits to choose from and the quality of the product is good too.

I love fishing the rocks, so I'll say bobber, jig, and a leech(minnow).
