Anyhow I was doin' a lil' lite babblin' on the net last while watchin' a re-run of Caddy Shack & I'll drop it off here to see if 1st has any S-Eye interest --

.. Topic .. "Summer saugeye"

roadman

Hey Guys,

I know a lot of you catch saugeye in the lakes trolling and jigging blade baits.

Most all of my local lakes are stocked with saugeye but I have never caught one in the lake, just in the spillways in cold weather.

I watched Corey and the gang work their blade baits at the first iceout outing at Tappan.

Can you catch Saugeye all year long in the lake or is it seasonal spring summer fall winter??

husky hooker

heh heh come on roadman, you didn ask that??? are the saugeye in the lake all year? do they eat all year?summer time jigs, drift, troll or throw. cold weather... blades and jigs ,minnows and those central guys have some secrets.........husk

roadman

It may seem like a dumb question but I hardly ever here of anyone fishing for or catching and saugeye around here in the lakes anymore. Spring and summer come along ad all we here about are bass, crappie and cats.

I know about some places on Ceasar creek where saugeye are caught. Paint creek, Rocky Fork and Cowan should be in great shape as far as population but you here of very few getting caught other than in the spillways.

I am planning on targeting saugeye this summer.

Saugeye Troller

They are bunched up when the bite is on at at the spillways till they fall back & the bite goes dead or they have full-bellies.

They eat year around but stay on the move in the lakes followin' food sources, which means locating them both horiz & vert(at times) when they do Not have full-belly's ~ Bass & S-Eyes both use structure, but a S-Eye will use every last drop of water in the lake & every lake is a lil' different in there movements n' feedin' locations. I guess that unless you want to just catch the smelt size in known locations when present, your just gonna have to become a I-Guy & devote the time n' energy into learnin' castin', trollin' n' Jiggin' methods for S-Eyes till you have it down to a fine art, along with learnin' ever inch of your home lake, along with understandin' the "whys" of how the S-Eye lives N' survives to reach the 20"+ size of a fair size Eye (too many commas). You can always use someone elses "Yesterdays" canned program, but odds say that the S-Eyes are on a different program the next day for the most part - mostly you can blame that on mother nature & the twists that she throws into the game.

roadman

It will probably be tough to figure them out on the lakes around here but I'm gonna try.

I've been going around and making notes about structure on the maps durring draw down but most of the lakes are just mud flats with very little definition.

Saugeye Troller

PS I see that you stated summer

Summer-time means that most lakes are filled to the brim with new hatched food just the right size to throw the feed bag on any time of the day or nite that the S-Eyes want & it lasts for short periods ... not gonna get into detail, it would take all nite

On my lake somewhere between late April till mid-June when the bite slows to the above summer condtions you can find several locations of pods on the feed at different times of the "day" & if you run n' gun the pods it is easy to have a 200-300 a-day for two Anglers at that time of year if you can stay away from the tail-gaters that put the S-Eyes down off the flats n' breaks.

From ice-out till the above time-period I look for the warmest water, what mother nature says to do/goto & do the Jig n' T-Tail thing.

Saugeye Troller

most of the lakes are just mud flats with very little definition

That's all I have to work with on 5800 acres other than shore-line rip-rap n' a few dredge slots.

a break to me is between 6" to a foot in 2-4' of water on my mud bottom lake - the wave action n' blows will give the the breaks n' topside flat a cleaner gravely bottom *hint* ~ I posted numerous times over the years about hard-bottom flats n' breaks, that is what creates them - the are easy to find on plane with good electronics for the hard-bottom because many flats are yuck mud & dead.

roadman

Thanks Guys
I'm gonna go back through the archives. The more I think about it the more I remember about previous discussions and watching others fish and troll.

husky hooker

there ya go

remember in the spring they stay close to shore also. husky jerks, 3in chartreuse jigs some rattle traps. when summer in throw a couple spoons. what i like is popping a live crawler on bottom, weight foward.tappen lake is hard to figure them out all the time, but we do are best by the bridges, corey like throwing and trolling from a boat.im not good on this stuff im just passing on what was told to me by an expert!!!

Joe Pollock & several other SW Ohio WOWC members live down your way & maybe could help you shorten the L-curve on your lakes .. Last nite I was a-watchin' a re-run of Caddy Shack for the Zillionith time while typin' the above & I kinda think that lil' gopher & me have alot common.

Joe

Yea Joe has a lot of info. I'm looking back through my pm's and everything.

I'm sure I have one or 2 from Joe and also Mrfishohio on saugeye in Ceasars creek. If I remember right that was the first time I met you and we all talked about this same subject. (remember the hump out from the ramp)

Steve ~ I was just curious if any of the 1st members chased Saugeyes on your board. They kinda fit into a area of a lake Eye that doesn't play by Walleye rules along with the Saugers luv of the bottom & quite a few new ones

See you on the ~~~~~

There is a pretty good Saugeye population in some of the waters over here in the west and midwest, so I am sure there are plenty of anglers here that catch them. Do they behave differently than the walleyes on Erie?

Yes ... if they were in Erie (could be a few in low no#s with Sauger cross), I would think Smallmouth methods/locations would out perform typical Walleye methods. It would be interesting to see if they would adapt to Erie's suspended baitfish over time.

Here's a good Saugeye read, if you missed it --
