Just got a call out of the blue from a fellow river guide that started into the business about the same time I did in the mid 80's. Both he and I ran Steelhead and Salmon trips on the Big Manistee and Pere Marquette Rivers seperately, and often teamed up when the clients needed more boats for group trips. I'd still see him from time to time fishing out of my jet sled, even though I sold my drift boat in 2000 because of rotator cuff problems. Usually on the lower Pere Marquette during the fall salmon run. I didn't see him last year at all and wondered where he was.

Seems he took a trip to British Columbia last summer and feel into a dream deal of a life time. The dirty rat bought a fishing lodge on the Skenna River at the foot of some beautiful mountain range, and him and the wife run the lodge and fishing guide service. Said he caught 9 Steelhead last season over 20 pounds and 2 salmon over 60. He had me grinding my teeth right into the phone. I always thought I was living the dream, that is until he called.

I dream of doing something similar, but without the resort. A cabin up in Dryden, our house in Minoqua, sell the Rhinelander property and homes ( for ALOT, or the rest of this doesn't work at all), and head to the southern saltwater for the deep winter. I would like to do this before I hit 70, too.

Better hurry, Stever!! hehehe

I entertained moving to North Dakota about 15 years ago. I was newly single again, and love the hunting and fishing opportunities there. But, then I awoke from that dream, and am still here in Milwaukee. May have the opportunity to move to Stevens Point or Appleton area soon. That would work for me.

Forget Point and Appleton, how about the great city of Oshkosh? We would love to have you here. There are plenty of those big fish here also just alittle more of a challenge to catch them. Make the right choice!

Appleton is close enough to O'burg. In fact, if I get to move to Appleton, that is where work is. The house would probably be a little south, maybe towards Winneconne way. Close enough to Bago, definatley close enough to the rest of the system, and even closer to Green Bay and up north than I am now. As for Point? I think that is my first choice, and would be a great place to finish raising the kids. I like the idea of 1 1/2 hours away from Vilas/Oneida Counties.

One thing is for certain, I will fish with some more of you this coming year!

Shep, Appleton? GREAT MOVE. I am in Freedom and its a stones throw to Depere or Bago, great growing community, although if your moving to the area for work it means we are going to be competitors I think! Lets talk soon, are you doing any ice fishing this year?
Good Luck

Shep, Appleton is only 2 hours away from the Hideout, and the Hideout welcomes little Lab pups, too!
