I'm looking to buy a boat this spring and I've narrowed the field down to 4 boats. Three of these boats have either Mercury 250 Pro XS or E-TEC 250 HO on them. Which is more reliable? I've run 225-250 4 stroke Yamaha's in the past and they were near bulletproof, so I have little experience with these other motors. Thanks in advance!!

The Pro XS imo is the most bulletproof motor on the market and has been for nearly the last 10 years or since they resolved issues with it in 2002 or so. Overall performance, fuel economy, top end, and holeshot I believe is better as well. Typically the Mercury is also a little bit cheaper and certainly easier to find a Mercury dealer if you were ever to have a problem.

Pick one Jerry. They're both great motors. Etec is a little quieter. Merc oil is cheaper. Merc probably has s slight edge on overall performance and a bit on mileage. Merc is shiny BLACK, and the Canadian owned motor has Old Glory on it, eh?

Either way, be careful. You won't be used to all that new power!

I have an E-tec 250H.O. on my 2010 621 and am very happy with the all around performance and fuel mileage. Nice and quiet as well!!!!
