Pay Day at Little Bay (de noc)

Oh yeah, another good fishing day is to be recorded thanx to Trap, and his vast, past-experience catching 'eyes on Little Bay de Noc, Upper Michigan. And as always, I was outfished. With the final score tallying Trap- 3 legal walleye, and Rick- 1 legal walleye.

But before you feast your eyes on these beautiful fish (found in the files linked below), there was a bit of contention twixt Trap and I, concerning the use of tip-ups for walleyes.

Trap doesn't like to use them. And that is pretty much end of discussion. Sure, he will go on about how they take up to much fishing time in setting and tending them. Then he'll say something about them taking your attention from where its needed most - on the flasher looking for fish swimming past your jigging presentation. He has good points.

But having used tip-ups all of my way to short of ice-fishing experiences, this logger-head brain of mine will never give in to this madness. And to drive my idea home to Trap, this is how I caught my one lone legal walleye. Yippee!

But you'd think that this Trap guy would cut me a little slack on this? Oh no! As I walked back to his shack carrying my prize fish, was hollering something about him repeating these earlier statements concerning tip-ups. Pfffft! All he would answer is; told you this was a big fish spot.

Never mind that my fish was caught on a tip-up!:-):-)

Say Rick, I'll take quality over quantity any day. Nice fish!(No offense intended Trap!)

What Rick forgot to mention was that I had one flopping on the ice before he even got that tip-up out of the truck. Yeah, I guess that they actually work but I still will have a hard time putting one out unless I know I'll be staying in the spot for a long time. I'm sure I'll be reminded of who caught the biggest fish that day and how it was caught. But, in a small way I can take a little credit for that fish too. It was a good day of fishing, lots of snow on the ice and we found 12 to 14 inches of ice. Hey Rick, if your only going to catch one fish it better be that big!

Yes! And my new goal the next time we go is, I'm going to catch more walleyes than you!

Yeah, we'll go double or nothing on that buck you owe me. I'll forget the extra fl-8 next time too! Hope it's 30 below and windy, then we will see how great tip-ups are!

Nice fish guys! Did you fish one spot, or did you move around. If the plan was to fish one spot, then I would have put out a tip-up and jigged. -30? No way I'm putting out a tipup!

Shep, we hopped around a little to find some fish, then once we had what was an O.K. spot we put out a few tip-ups and stayed put. You just never now where the best spot is.

Hehehehehe (laughing deviously).

Actually, poor Trap is a bit slow on the punch here. He should be talking about how many fish we each caught while sitting side by side jigging all day long!

Trap - 3 legals and many sublegals.

Rick.

Good to see them LBDN eyes came out of their arctic blast slump they were in on the 10th and 11th. I'd give her another try, but the Saginaw Eyes now becon me. Nothing like a 10 minute drive versus that 6 hour one-way marathon.

One other thing I'd like answered if you guys can. And this isn't to put a hole in anybodys fun or success baloon. I was told that LBDN walleyes have a contaminent warning on them. Mercury or something like it from the plant seepage in the area. Is this true?

Not sure about it, but will mention that all the waters of the Great Lakes has warnings about eating to much of it's fish inhabitants. Think it's also a measure of the larger fish having more accumulated mercury.

Also remember reading that many of these Michigan fish are found through-out the Bay of Green Bay - and can be swimming in the even worse water coming from the Fox River. But also could be out in the more cleaner Lake Michigan water.

So its a crap shoot. I for one will take my chances and eat a few. Can't be much worse than corporate farm raised food loaded up with steriods, vaccinations, fertilizers, pesticides, and anything else I might have missed!

From that trip looks like action went to jiggin, size to the tip up.

First off, let me say, I'm NOT from that area, but fished it several times in the last few years. As for the fish consumption warnings, I read them in the hand out from the Wisconsin Department of Natural resources. Yes, there are some warnings about both mercury and carsinigans (spl?) but I do not remember the specifics. I also remember a friend of mine's uncle who was a charter captain out of Mannitowac (spl again) area telling me years ago that while the restriction has gotten tighter over the years, the fish are the same as they were back in the 60's when these restrictions first came out, and they are getting better. Usually, if you are good with a filet knife, and know how to remove the belly meat and the blood line, you do not have to worry about anything. My understanding is that those areas of the fish are where those dangerous elements assimulate, and removing them pretty much removes any concerns about eating those fish. If you check the web site for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, you should be able to find the warning.
