Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | Hey Guys.
I've been quilty of adultry lately. That is, visiting other walleye message boards learning or putting in my 2 cent. I recently chimed in on a couple posts on one board that would make a good thread on the WF board. Without going into book-like details, heres the jest of what transpired and the start of what should be a good topic for everybody here.
With the recent subjects of Jigging Raps and Painting Red lips on your cranks. It made me wonder, just how many secret or well know crankbait or terminal tackle related fishing modifications we use to inhance our fish catching chances.
I've forever been a crankbait tinker. And I guess the key is, to effectivly inhance the catching/holding power of a certain cranks or lure, but to not change that part of it, that attracts the fish to it's charm in the first place.
Changing hook size is often the most used modification I guess. And exactly the one that will often change the vibration or action that that particular lure has. Yet, by doing so in a lot of cases I can sight myself, raised my (in the boat) ratio quite substancially.
So what's your favorite modification and explain how it's changed your luck.

Location: Omro,Wi. | I'll share a few things,I'm not going to give out the very best secrets though, who knows maybe some day I'll start fishing tournaments too. Some basics are trimming lips(the narrower the more wobble),painting lips red, gold,or chrome.Putting a spinner blades in front of the bait,(about 3 feet up the line),adding split shots in front of shallow running baits,or using them on a 3-way rig, adding reflective tape to the sides, and reflective eyes, adding live bait to the rear hook, putting ordinary jig rattle tubes on the snap, and my personal favorite, and don't know why it works, but I got it from a old-timer,who did it to his lazy-ikes,is.........................tie a 6-inch piece of red yarn to the bottom treble hook.Hope it gets you thinking....Hafe |

| Most of my modifications come in tying my own crawler harnesses. Primarily bead and blade combinations. Have found some unique colored glass tubes I use instead of a row of beads that really help up my average against others during a tough bite. |

| I use a crawler on the first hook of my cranks when I'm fishing clear lakes. Most people say they use just a 1/2 of one but I like the whole crawler. Pinch off the end for a little scent and it adds a nice little "WAG" to the action. I also put on at least one split ring to most all of my trolling spoons to help prevent burn-out. Hutch

| Hafe, you gave away one of me secrets!!!!..Just kidding, about 30 some years ago when I discovered little cleo's, the red yarn trick was the ONLY way to catch more fish than my buddies and I was fortunate enough to get them to carry home my catch on their bikes! I take a 2" piece of red Yarn and tie it thru the hook ring in a single knot keep one piece longer than the other but not more than a 1/4" longer than the treble! I have also discovered that Rubber bands are the best "Quick Release" you can get. The most important though is to have the best amunition you can afford when headin out! 500 cranks aren't enough! And keep changin em up!
Good Luck

Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | I think the Red yarn trick has been around for generations. My Grandpa used to pull some off from his Old red hunting hat for a teaser on his Russin ice fishing hook, before Blaze Orange became fasion for deer hunters. Then once he got that first perch on the yarn, the perches eyes were donated and became the attractor.
Gotta believe thats why those little Red plastic add-on tabs that come on all size Sweedish Pimples and Do-Jiggers products, are put on.

| Probably where the yarn fly came from that people use instead of spawn when fishing steelhead and salmon in the streams. |

Location: Wind lake, Wi | One of my favorite little tricks for casting cranks at night in shallow rocky areas is to have strips of glow tape on each side and remove the front treble if its really rocky. I out fished all my buds 6 to 1 a few times out. Now they all have my set up. |

I like that removal of the front hook idea. I'll bet a man could pinch on a small split shot to the front hook eye, to replace the extracted weight of the hook if needed to get the same action out of the crank.

Location: Kingston, Ontario | I've seen the adding a worm to a crankbait many years ago, but whenever I get a piece of weed on the hook, the cranks run out of line.
What makes the worm different to a piece of weed?
I like that red yarn on Little Cleo, just bought a couple for ice fishing on Monday, May have to try the red yarn tip.
Thanks for the tips and suggestions - sometimes you need all the help ou can get. |
