Location: Rhinelander | It was cooler than normal for the end of April (no big shock there...) today at launch time with temps in the 40's and occasional light sprinkles. There was concern over the impending big winds in the forecast, but the weather reports have the first winds over 12MPH coming in after 4 PM. Most of the field headed towards the big lake.
Pre-fish was very good, producing numbers of big walleyes. According to Mike Gofron, Mark Brumbaugh, and Koery Sprengel, the lake is the place to be as the river faded for big walleyes middle of the week. The run to the fish is about 35 miles, so worrying about the winds is probably wise.
Tommy Skarlis 'sort of' admitted to heading to Canadian waters. Sort of.
Cranks are the leading big fish producer with Berkley Flicker Minnows as the number one choice of the Pros we interviewed this morning. 10# to 14# Trilene monofilament is the line of choice. Everyone reported good numbers of fish over 230" in practice, and with the incoming weather, the bite should be great.

Location: Rhinelander | Mercury pro Brian Bjorkman slammed 'em to take a 3.5 pound lead into Day Two. Dan Stier is in second, and Ryan Buddie in third.
The winds weather changes made a mess of quite a few game plans today as areas of Erie that were clear and laden with fish were stirred up to as dark as coffee, moving the fish as much as several miles.
The winds changed again at the end of today, so it's anyone's game tomorrow if the areas the top ten are fishing are either hard reach or hard to fish tomorrow with the winds going WNW at 15 by early afternoon. The long ride to the fish becomes a potential deal breaker if top speed is only in the teens. If the winds only hit a max of 15, things shouldn't get too crazy out there.
Trolling cranks ruled the day for technique.
