O.K guys, everyone knows how many walleyes head up the rivers in spring to spawn, but I'm sure not all the fish leave the main lake. What percentage of fish do you think actually stay in the lake to spawn? What ares of the lake do you think they use to spawn? Just curious.

I think that depends on the water level! Some years only half the population goes,as I have caught many eyes on the reefs during spawning, just my opinion.....

I went out on the DNR trawler one year and asked that very question. The answer I was given was 50% of the fish stay in the lake.

Maybe one reason so many fish the river during spawn is because the fish are concentrated together.

I think it depends on the body of water temp etc, The Winnebago system is believed to have three different groups of fish, The river batch, upper lakes and bago fish, Many of the Bago fish hang on the reefs in spring and can be caught there thru the spring season, As for the river fish that population seems to be growing as there are tens of thousands up the system now. There is a group also that will begin staging at the mouth in the upper lakes in the coming weeks. The past few years conditions have been perfect for the upper lakes and the river as many fish are being caught this year.
Good Luck

If I recall, KKK had some figures on the estimated number of lake spawners vs. river run fish. If he's listening, maybe he can fill us in??
