Location: princeton Il. | i like to start out using short shank when fishing live bait such as minnows and leeches and long shank when using plastic(tails, shad bodies etc.) and then let the fish tell me what to do. sounds easy BUT ITS FISHING |

Location: Berlin | The longer the shank the better for me in all situations. I can't stand stinger hooks so the long hook works well for me. I have even had hooks custom made with a triple x long shank. The harnesses I gave you have them on. I also like a lighter hook unless I am fishing around weeds or timber. |

Location: Wind lake, Wi | When I make my own jigs I over size the hook by one or two sizes. I like longer and wider shank hooks for jigging because it gives the fish more room to bite down on and I think the hooking percentage is way better. |

| I prefer the shorter shanks for live bait applications and the longer shanks for plastics. The biggest factor for me really is the hook gap, especially if I am working plastics. That gap can make all the difference in the world. As for stinger hooks, maybe at times, but I personally think they cost you more fish than they catch.
Good question, but, after all this time on this board, I thought the only thing you guys Wisconsin did was troll!!!

Location: blue mounds, wisc | jack, i grew up jigging.as far back as i can remember i had a jig pole in hand.i started trolling seven years ago and have caught more and bigger fish.i have alot of confidence in the jig.as you guys are saying,i too have to have a wide gap. i like the short shank 90 percent of the time because i use live bait, were trying to imitate minnows so that is what i use, have the lips kissing the lead.the long shank jig is great with hair and plastic.i never use a stinger hook, because if there hitting short you got to lighten up a size and let the fish chew on the minnow a second or two, then drive it home. |

Being I'm from "VIKING LAND" I wouldn't know! See, up here in "God's Country" we only use 1 line since the fishing is so good. If we used 3, our day would be over before we got to our second spot!
What fun would that be?

| Both come in to play even in a live bait situation. When fishing with a typical emerald shiner or fathead I usually start with a wide gap, short shank hook because I feel the minnow stays on the presentation better (tighter to the jig head), but will switch to a long shank if I'm getting short strikes. Now if I'm using large minnows I will go to the long shank. For leeches short shank, for nightvrawlers long shank and with plastics long shank. I've got plenty of both in all my favorite color patterns. |
