Just wondering who will be out there spearing this year? I've never gone before, but I hear that it's fun. Give us your reports if you go, including water clarity and if you're seeing alot of bait and/or walleyes. Get some pictures for the website if you can too. Goood luck and be safe out there.

Are licenses given to all who apply? And heard there are outfitters who rent shacks with all the equipment needed. Does anyone know of this?

Can't buy licenses anymore. You must buy by oct 31, anyone can get them. Been doing this for 25 years now. great sport, gets a little boring at times. When that old log floats in, you will be hook for life. e-mail for any other information

Yes people do rent shanties all set-up with everything ready to go. Spear, gaff hook, heater, ride out if needed. I rent one out every year and have friends that do the same.

Aren't the spearing hours limited? Am thinking about fishing DePere near Larry & Tyee, so if any of you get your spear into a big sturgeon, I'll come running with my camera! 1-920-901-0024

Spearing hours are 6:30-12:30 starting Sat. morning. No jigging in the big hole but tipups can be used outside as long as you check them. There are harvest caps for different groups of fish,ie. adult male and female and juvinile male and female. Once a certain percentage of these groups is taken the DNR will close the season in 24 hours. You can start cutting holes on Thurs. If you intend to occupy the shack for fishing in the afternoon the spears must be removed and you still can't use the big hole. If you want to observe holes being cut and shacks being set up you can come to the Paynes Point Hook and Spear Club on Cty. A. Lots of friendly folks who let you tag along. I'll be manning a plow truck if I don't have to work. If you've never been out to see this I'll be glad to show you around. If I'm not there, one of the other guys will.
Also, our fisheree starts Fri. night with WAPL's house band, Five O'Clock Traffic Jam. Lots of food, beverages, and raffles. Free parking on the plowed ice.
