How much of the bottom, say in 30', does a sonar cover? How does that work?

Hey Rookie,
If you have a Lowrance or a similar LCD unit, and it operates at 192, then you are looking at 1/3 the total depth at the bottom and a ratio at that for anywhere between. So in 30' your circle of cooverage is 10', and in 10, it is 3.3 feet, approximately. The 200 covers slightly less, and the 50 way more, but the 50 is designed to use in bluewater applications and won't help you much in 'shallow' water.

The transducer send/receives the signal produced by the sonar. One cycle sends, the next receives, and the length of time it takes for the sound to bounce off the bottom and objects in between back to the unit is measured to get a depth reading.

'Hooks' are created from the boat going over a fish or object. As the cone shaped sounder area hits the fish, the outside edge of that 'triangle' is further away than when the fish is in the center, just under the boat, so the screen signal will be thinner, and slightly lower than when the fish enters the middle of the cone, and again thiner and lower as the cone edge passes over the fish, creating a 'hook'. If the boat is stationary, and a fish swims slowly through or sits under the boat, the fish signal will be a somewhat solid line across he screen. The length of the hook on the display only indicates a signal that was in the cone for a long period of time. the depth of the center of the hook is an indication of the fish size. What you want are 'eyes that make the unit greyline in the hook center.

Hope this helps some!

I depends on the transducer angle. You can go to www.vexilar.com and they have a chart for different angles and depths. Some good reading too.Go to the get help section and look under the FAQ which beam angle do I need.
