Now that this post has your attention.......

Something has become very apparent to me with this recent, and ongoing snowfall. Have you ever noticed how many people are so dominated by the most natural of things? How their lives are consumed by worry over something they cannot possibly change?

All day yesterday many people I talked to were just consumed by the upcomming, and ongoing snowfall. Frought with worry, and complaining all day about something as natural as the sun, especially in this part of the great white North.

All the local radio stations talked about, in every news break and most of the morning shows commentary was, the coming snow storm. There was less attention paid to the capture of Saddam Hussien, or the disapearance of a local woman (she's still missing) than the radio and everyday people are giving this bad weather.

Bad weather......

Why is a snowfall in the UP bad weather? Did it break Grandmas vase? Did it toss a brick through a church window or kick a cat? Snowfall is bad weather?

Not in my book. A blizzard is severe weather, but bad? And ths is, at least around here, not much of a "storm" though it is being billed as the worst thing since the Great depression!

Now if this was Miami and it was snowing, well then it would be worthy of so much attention, worry and fret.....

Ralph,
Pretty much the same thing as the off the wall threads that fly around in the dead of winter on these boards...most folks are tired of winter and it does not take much to set them off on a streak with the blues. Small talk about the weather is often an icebreaker to start up a conversation. Its usually safer than asking "are you pregnant" only to find out that weight is "natural"
P.S. Don't let the compainers start you complaining about the complainers!
Take care,
Jim O

Its part of the Human Psych, Ralph.

Over 1000's of years, the daily weather was an important consideration for most all folks. In winter, it greatly hindered the ability for anyone to get around and/or stay warm (hard to get wood to burn if there was 10 feet of snow!). Summertime, it meant even more as it plotted the course towards the level of food in the larder.

Just think back less than 100 years and these concerns were so important.

Fast forward all this history and compare it with today. It does seem very ridiculous to be worried over such a trival matter, as we have - in the short term - conquered the enviroment. Its just that some things are hard to learn..

So Ralph, my good friend, just enjoy these moments and have some fun pretending that one inch of snow may be the end of all things as we know it!

Oh yes, a very good obversation that generates much discussion by alot of folks for sure!

Is it raining up there, or snowing? I really need to get at my woodpile up there, and hope the snow is melting away!

Actually there's more to it than just the human psyche. Weather has become big business. Media outlets discovered that people tune in when "severe" weather is imminent and more viewers/listeners means higher ad rates. You don't think that TV stations invest in all those fancy radar systems as a public service do you?? Many stations actually sell ad packages for "severe weather alerts" and many of those advertisers are associated with the weather. Snowstorm on the way, you'll here more ads for snowblowers. Hailstorm, "Oh, Oh! better get Macco"

Heavy wet snow is heavy heavy on the ice to sink sink away! Anything that contributes to the ice disappearing has to be good!LOL

Snow can go, Ice can stay.

That would be good words for a group chant.

Well, we got about another 5" here last night, making it near impossible to get out on some of the lakes. We can use the runoff though, most of the lakes here were very low last Fall.

I get a kick out of the media and how they build up an impending snowfall. Seems like if more than 2" is predicted, they hype it to the point that schools and the like start announcing the night before they are closing. I think it took like 6" or more for scholls to close when I was a kid. Course, then, only a small percentage of the kids were bussed. Not like today, when most are! hehehe

Actually, this has been a good year for snow, and has helped the resorts/motels/taverns up north a lot with snowmobilers finally having a good year to have some fun. Plus, we should have some good spawning this spring in the Bago chain with a good runoff.
