Location: Rhinelander | The 2018 Mercury Marine National Walleye Tournament field of 291 boats headed out on the water this morning onto a uncharacteristically calm Winnebago. The bite has been excellent, with numerous 18" to 20" walleyes reported, especially trolling the main lake working the river. Predictions are a limit each day at the 20" mark and a big kicker fish or two will win the event.
Winds are East with maximum gusts at 13 today, under partly cloudy skies, a chance for some rain and a thunderstorm, and highs in the middle 70's. Perfect!
The weigh in festivities on stage will begin around 2 PM today.

Location: Rhinelander | Gary and Hunter Will brought in a rare 23.07 pound basket today to take a commanding 3 1/2 pound lead at the 2018 Mercury Marine National Walleye Tournament. They got into the bigger fish just before heading in, so it's tough to predict if the same conditions will be available tomorrow.
The overall bite was very good, with a vast majority of the teams limiting. Trolling seemed to be the technique of choice by most.
There was one anomaly, a helicopter crash in the river stopped a few of the boats from getting in, so a scale and weigh-in team was dispatched to Osh Kosh to weigh them in on the river.
Below are your top ten, note how bunched up the teams are from 5th to tenth, it's going to be a shoot-out tomorrow!
The weather tomorrow looks very similar to today, with temps in the 70's and winds out of the East to 13. The teams will leave tomorrow morning under partly cloudy skies and winds at 8 out of the East.

Location: Neenah, WI | Does anyone else find it strange that there are no weights that have .16 to .99? All weights end with .00 to .15
That seems statistically impossible.

Location: Neenah, WI | It's likely the .00 to .15 is ounces. But lbs/oz is not listed with x.xx, and previous Merc Nationals used .00 - .99. http://www.mercurynational.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/2017.pdf

Location: Rhinelander | Logan Lynch of Eldorado WI and Ryan Morgan of Fond Du Du Lac took the win at the Merc Nationals today by the narrowest of margins over yesterday's leaders, Gary and Hunter Will. The Wills went back to the rock pile that gave them the incredible lead yesterday, and it was stingy to say the least, giving up only 8.09 today. Lynch and Morgan weighed 19.15 yesterday, and 12.03 today to take the win by two ounces. The win was worth a new 18' Tracker fully rigged and powered by a 200 Merc fourstroke and $4000. Second place for the Wills was worth $10000 cash.
Third went to Moderow and Vanderbrink, fourth to Petrie and Petrie, and rounding out the top five were Foster and Deffner.
Overall, the weights were down an average of 2# per basket today due to stronger winds and a drop in water temps. Most of the walleyes caught were caught trolling harnesses and cranks. Watch the winning video, there's a story of a broken net...
