Battery Power

Have a 74lb Thrust 24 volt Maxxum on the bow of my boat, and one day last year on Pepin, we were using this motor while fighting big wind and waves. Trying to slip the current I had to keep the motor upwards of 80% strength, and at this level, the batteries wore down well before the day ended (lasted maybe 3 hours).

The batteries are Optima and one question I have is; is this an acceptable amount of time?

And if so, can I use a normal battery transfer switch on two pairs of batteries (24 volt)?

The batteries should have lasted longer by quite a bit. I would bet they were either not fully charged, or have a problem. I have run a similar motor all day in current, no problem.
