Fished the Pete on Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday morning. Friday, only fished for a couple hours, and got a couple shorts from the channel by the Tubes. Jig and minnow.

Saturday, was on the water at 7:30 AM. Met Trautman, Mike, while launching. I started out with a "Reduce Throttle" alarm on my SmartCraft gauges. No specific alarm, so after scrolling through the gagues, I deduced that my impeller must need replacing. I only had about 1 # at idle, and about 6# at half throttle. Finally, it started peeing better, and I was able to run. Still, only about 9# at cruising speed. I seem to remeber close to 15 or so, when it was new.

By this time, Trautman had passed me, and we headed up the river. I went up to the dam, and watched for a while. there was good current, and it wasn't too crowded. I decided to start there and work my way down, and see what and where the fish were holding. It wasn't long and I had my first fish, a fiesty 14"er. Seems as though I was getting a lot of these, as the time flew. Before I knew it, I was past the big bend with all the rocks! Trautman was there as well, and was trolling the channel breaks. I fished another hour or so, and around 5:00, I called it quits. I did manage 2 slot fish, and one at 21.5". Didn't see a lot of slot fish caught. I think I caught around 40-50 of those 13-14"ers, though. It was alot of fun, even with the wind and cold. COnsidering this was really my first time on the Pete in a boat, I felt pretty good about the day I had.

Sunday, Trautman and I fished together in his boat. We met at 7:30, ran the channel to mark his plot trail for next weekend, and decided to troll the channel. We caught 5 shorts. Had a good time, but had to leave at noon for the trip back to home and family. Thanks, Trautman, had a good time.

Here's a pick of Trautman and crew on Saturday, and some of the 50+ Sandhills in the field by my MIL's house in Adams.

Good report Shep. As far as your motor goes-I think there's a thermostat in there. With this cold weather it takes a bit to warm up and start peeing. I don't know how many lbs. of pressure you should have though. Hope it's nothing serious.

Dale,

Thanks. I guess my report was kinda lacking in details. I jigged all day Saturday, and found that most fish were on the breaks, between 9 and 12 feet. The two slot fish I got came from the same area, but they were deeper at 15-17 feet. Fatheads and Chubs worked. Shiners didn't do as well.

The motor was up to 150 degrees, before I tried to take off. It was peeing, but didn't seem as strong a stream. I will call the dealer today, and ask what the "Reduce Throttle" deal is. I still suspect an impellor. Never had one go this quick before. 2 years. Sheesh.

Shep,
Pleasure to meet you and also to fish together!
Hope the Smart Gauges did right by you and protected the big boy on the transom!
After dropping you off for the Easter feast you had planned, went back up hill. Caught a dozen or so shorts. Only saw 8 more boats, and the conditions were crazy! Snow, blizard, sun, what a great day for fishing! Trolled back down and more shorts, plus 2 legals, 16.5" and a nice fat 19.5" female not spawned yet! Plan on going up Friday to fish. Call me!

Another fun week of fishing on Petenwell has just finished with Monday's Trip. Guided Fri,Sat. Monday. Saw that Lund in the picture a couple of times. You should have stayed longer below the island. All in all about forty keepers in three days(50-60 fish a day). Numerous fish from 20-27.99999 almost all still carrying eggs and or still solid. Smaller females seem to have dropped or were dropping their eggs. To my guide customers credit they had no problem releasing anything with eggs even the 15s. They actually only took 8 fish home in 3 days. Males 15-17 inches.

We had a little thrill on Monday afternoon after a long day of 6-16 inch fish,(by far the worst day for bigger fish). When we pulled into a spot that normally doesn't produce till Late summer. Guide customer had his lure 3 feet from the boat in about 2 feet of water and a Sheeba grabbed it zipped line forward and surface next to the boat, where the two customers had a second to stare at her in shock, turned her head gave a jerk and was gone. Both these guys fish the Depere run and Green Bay,(they live there),and all they could say was that is was a HUUUUUGGGEEE female. Easily 30+..... their guide was relieved to here that a few seconds faster from the front of the boat to the back with the net wouldn't have mattered. The drag slipped, apparently too loose and he said that he probably never got a hookset. If like me he sets his drag for 2-3 lb fish, no wonder the Sheeba zipped line off, and it sure wasn't his fault especially since he only had about five feet out to get it to the bottom in 3 feet. Anyway they were pretty certain it was a $1000 or more likely a $2500 fish.(Nekoosa Walleye Days). Wish I wasn't such a poorboy so I could have a big enough boat to have signed up as a pro instead of a co for RCL Leaugue Saturday... Hopefully I can be of some assistance to whoever I get matched up with. You never know... in the Rcl Tour some of the guys ask and some don't. Talked to some good friends,(folks I see every year guiding on Pete), and they all said they didn't think that we had seen the big fish run to spawn areas yet. They are there or close just not spawning.... I have to agree. Only thing none of us were sure of is how fast the warm up will set it off... This week or next. My guess is 4/17/04.... Hope to see you guys there Lawrence

Lawrence,
Any one who gets you in there boat on the Pete, will have gotten a unbelievable asset.
Wish I was in, and drew you for the day.
Just having another good stick in the boat is an asset.
Good luck to all.
