Subject: looking for truck to pull 20 foot alum boat

i recently bought a bigger boat and need to get bigger veh to pull it, and am trying to decide on buying an older pickup more in my price range or borrow some money for one a few years old, ie, a 91-94 vs a 96-2000. i saw one i liked with about 160,000 mile (91 silverado) but am thinking the mileage may be too high, can anyone share their experiences and advice to help me make my decision? also are 4x4 and extra back seat worth extra money, thankx.

For sure buy an extended cab. I run used trucks bought with about 60 K on them until I hit about 200K, running synthetic oil every 5000 miles at about 60K a year. I sold my last one for about $5000 to a young man who put another 100K on it so far. I have run the Chevy 4X4 Ex cabs, liked them except for the 98 I had.I ran my 1994 GMC for almost a quarter million miles, with many of those towing a 20' boat! I have a 98 F150 now, and really am happy with it. I expect I will run this one another year.

It's a buyers market out there for used Pick-Ups, so shop well!

Chevy's with the 5.7(350CI) engine would be worth getting. Fords with the 5.8(351) would also be good. Dodges with either the 5.2(318) or 5.9(360) should also work well. I do not know a lot about the newer engines in the Ford's or Chevy's except the Chevy 5.3, I have heard two people say they had trouble towing with the 5.3.. coulda just been them, though. Getting as low a mileage as possible is highly reccomended.

I used to have a 2000 chevy siverado ext. with the new motor that replaced the 350. I towed a 22ft. deep V with a cuddy and had no problems with it. On the open highway I did`nt even know it was back there.

I have a 99 Sierra with the 5.7. Pulls my 20ft Triton with no problems. My lease is up at the end of the year and I have not decided what to do with it yet. It is near mint condition and the buy out price is $12,500. With only 55,000 miles on it I think maybe I should just keep it. Anyway, I love the truck and I don't think you would regret buying one even if it is a little older.

I have found the 5.3 will outpull the older 5.7 Vortec. We tow boats all the time, with both. Both do fine, but the 5.3 is stronger (and more hp). We also use a 1994 Ford 3/4 ton 460c.i. for comparison, and a Dodge w/ Cummins.
No contest which will pull the most..
