I'm still stuck on nights till June, so I'm living through those of you who get to fish from time to time. Has anyone been on Winnebago, Butte des Mortes, Winneconne, or Poygan lately? Just wondering if it's still slow or things are starting to pick up. It would be nice if we had a warming trend so these fish could get it going. I was out Sunday morning for 4 hours in the MWS tourney but we blanked before I left and afterward too.

The lake was pretty worked up with that northeast wind last night, so I went to Sunset Point and caught dinner. It seemed that slip bobbers and night crawlers were the ticket. The people trolling eventually anchored up. I saw one nicer fish caught, everything else appeared to be about the size of a frying pan.

Fished yesterday(friday) on the upper lakes and tried all sorts of presentations in all sorts of spots. Was out from 6am till 330pm. Came up with 6 smaller eyes a couple of 20"ers, a 35" northern, a 10 lb carp, a dozen sheephead and a bluegill. Wind made it hard to fish a lot of the places I wanted to try. Warmest water I found was 57 degrees and that was at 300 pm. It didnt make a difference.

Made it out for a couple of hours today and managed to get some of them pan sized eyes.Pulled boards again with wally divers and shad raps.fished in 10-13fow 40-60ft back.10 fish for the pan.:-)Over half the fish we cleaned had 1-3 baitfish in them.fished from 10:00-1:30.Oh yeah our biggest fish was a fat and sassy sand pike 18"sure is nice to see some meat on their bones again. No I did'nt keep it.Also got my first sheapshead of the year too.:-( My buddy Gary will probably have them eaten by the time he gets home.He sure loves his fish.He even thins out the sheapshead population for the rest of us.I just can't get myself to eat a sheepy.Sorry Gary.He always tells me thats more for him.:-)

We slipbobbered the humps at Garlic yesterday and kept a few for supper. Threw back some 12-13" and a 22". It seemed about half and half leeches and crawler pieces. Lots of short bites. I guess stingers would have helped. 9-12' of water was best. As the sun got higher the bite tapered off. Went deeper to no avail. We trolled for about an hour with cranks and caught only little squirts. After all the bad weather it was nice to just get out there and enjoy the day.

I was wondering where Kalbus Park is and where is Long Point. It sounds like those 2 areas are pretty productive in catching some eyes. I have no fish and seem to have a hard time catching them so looking for a place to go the next few days. What would be better...the east or west shore? What has been the best time to catch these walleyes? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Mike,
There are many better fisherman on this board than I, but I have been having some luck off of Roe Point (second point south of the mouth of the river in oshkosh) with slip bobbers and leeches or crawlers. Today there must have been 60 boats off of the Jesuit retreat house south of oshkosh - some slip bobbing, some trolling. These would be the first two places I would try. It seems like the bite has been best before 9 am and the last few hours before dark.

Good Luck to you

Hay every body, I,ve been out on Bago this week end with my boys, and had a great time. We limited out both days and caught fish from 13 to 27 inches. We kept 15 to 18 inchers for the table. The trolling bite is only going to get hotter. When we landed that 27 incher, I was getting ready to take the crank bait out , my son kept a little to much tention on the line, the bait poped out and barried its self into my midle finger. Did not have a wire cutters in the boat. ( **** ) So we trolled for another 2 hours with a cd 5 wally diver matalic pearch pattern hanging from my midle finger. My sons buddy came out fishing, and they just happen to have a wire cutters with them, cut the treble, sewed her through, glad that we had our limit ,because after that ordeal, i had enough of the day. I now have my wire cutters in my boat. Take care , have a great , safe fishing season .

Another reason to have several of each type and color of crankbait! The "hot bait" is supposed to be in the water, not hanging from your flesh. At least it was on a beauty, not a stupid sheephead!

Thx avg joe on a few tips where they are catching fish. I live on the north end of the lake so will probably stick to the northeast or northwest shores. Garlic Island area or calumet county park area. What kind of line do most guys use when trolling with boards. And what # line. Also is a glass rap just a rap with a glass looking body? I take it in size 5. I spend to much time on the golf course when I should be spending more time on the water when the fishing has been so good for most of you. Thanks for all info. Great site!!! Trilene 10 pound XT is a prefered line choice for trolling on Bago as the precission trolling book (bible) dive curves use that as their choice as well. I'm sure there are other preferences but this is what I prefer. The Glass Rap he refers too is a "new" bait by Normark/Rapala. A little pricy but worth every penny!
Good Luck

Hey Tyee, Did really good out tonight on east shore trolling. But I did see the glass raps in the store at fleet farm but they were the suspended rattlin type . Is that the bait that is so hot? And what colors are hot in that glass rap.? Got all my fish on a Storm Firetiger Hot N Tot. But would like to try a glass rap if they work. Thx for any info. Happy fish'n!!, MIke

Shorefishing was productive yesterday from 2pm-4pm on the westside. Three eyes 16"-18" (yummy), a smallie, a few lost fish and, of course, several sheephead. Fished a rocky shoreline using a slip-sinker rig, chartreuse floating jig, and a leech. Tried a few other combinations and crawlers but leeches were the ticket.

If one was to scroll back up the thread a bit, and read the story from Pat Gahan, I'm here to tell you he is on eating size fish on 'Bago!

We launched at Pipe and skirted acrossed the lake. Trolled around a number of reefs bouncing our cranks off the rocks, in as shallow as 5 feet of water. We had fish going the whole of our fishing time.

We brought home a limit of eaters with the count scored as follows: Rick - 5 fish, and Pat - 5 fish. But will give the bigger (not big mind you!) fish honors to Pat. We also caught sheeps and whiteys, which along with a bunch of shorts made for a very fun day with a very interesting and fun person.

The fish bit everything we trolled past them including Thundersticks, Reef Runers, Shad Raps, and Walley Divers.

Below please find a picture of Pat with a nice eater fish.

Can you tell me how to set up a slip sinker rig? what other set-ups do people use to fish the shallow water either from shore or in a boat? I want to take my 9 year old off shore out by the carp ponds, but wondering how to set him up to keep from getting hung up too much.

Thanks

Left a few reports last year as a guest, finally registered. Heres what I've been up to lately; Fished Wed 5-19 east shore, caught a two man limit of nice eaters with a 20" big fish of the day. They seemed to prefer perch or firetiger patterns in wallys and shad raps. Couldn't do anything on longer baits like DJs or lilrippers. Fished the west shore today, and also had a blast. Similar baits and a little better average size. This is one great fishery we've got here. CPR the big gals.

Avg Joe,

I spool 12# Trline, a swivel, then run about 3 feet of 8# Vanish to a Northland floating jighead. Above the swivel I use a 3/4-1oz Gremlin snap sinker. Cast out as far as you can and leave the line slack -- some guys like to keep the line tight but when fish hit they'll feel the resistance and drop it -- if you leave slack your line will tighten up as the fish runs with it. Let the fish take all the slack out then set the hook.

I sent you a PM about the carp ponds.

The wind and rain mucked things up pretty good this morning but I still managed a 15" eye, a 10" eye, a nice catfish, and more sheephead than usual. Shorefishing on the westside.

I went out yesterday around 3 and it seemed to take the fish a little while to get straightened out after the rain, though I did see a few caught around Stony Beach up to Roe Point. The slip bobber crowd seemed to do about equally as well as the trollers. In about 5-6 FOW things got busy just before dark and I got my 5 slip bobbing with leeches. Only eating size, but when you throw in a couple jumping smallies, a couple catfish and a friend who should host a "how not to fish show" it made for a pretty entertaining evening.

I wonder if the same thing is going to happen today...

Viking, thanks for the suggestions, I'll let you know how they work for me.

Fished Fri. and Sat. East Shore. The storms seemed to send the fish a little deeper, took me a while to fgure that out on Fri. Trolled 10' line first without a bite for quite a while before moving to about 14 to 15fow. caught four eyes, 14 and 15" on wallys and sparkletails in firetiger. Then the big storm chased me off the water. Sat was a tough bite for a friend and I as we only managed four keeper eyes and a couple shortys. Also caught a couple sauger, 17" and 12", nice to see them around yet, they looked real healthy. The DNR is working hard to save them.

Went out around noon and got 5 in an hour, Glass Shad raps and purple prizm T-sticks. Shads back 50-60 and t-sticks back 25. Running 1.8 to 2.0mph on GPS with the wind. Most small but was able to let two over twenty go back. They bit right thru the rain. Must be hungry devils.
Good Luck

trolled the east side out from stockbridge, pulled stick jrs and jointed raps. both worked good landing three nice fish each. biggest was a 24.5 let go for the tourny fishermen. had to play with the speed to get the fish, with the waves surging my boards . then it was the same color jrs and raps that would work so i had three of each out. plan on getting back out next weekend

Hey Rick,
Here's my report for the weekend tourney. We went to Garlic with no luck. Then we took the ride to Stockbridge. We put some jointed shad raps in, within 5 min.’s had 2 at 15". We tried to stay in 12'. We caught all small ones after that. Then around noon we headed back to the mouth of the river, on our first pass we had an 18 incher. That would be it for us. 5.15# ‘s for 19th out of 67 teams. Hey Larry just wondering if you were working the deeper water?

Tue. fished west shore between garlic and neenah. Caught five trolling various cranks, 12",12",13",14",14". Released all. Murky water, most fish came closer to neenah in about10-12FOW. Saw a few trollers out in the mud. Anyone know of a mud bite yet? Don't need any specific area if you don't want to give up a tourney spot, just wondering if its worth a try out there yet.

Trolled the mud today for 5 hours without a walleye. Saw one landed by another boat. Caught 3 white bass and one sheephead. Moved into the Northwest reef area along Stevens and got 3 fish between 13-16". Pulled everything I could think of trying and got the three on Deep Nitro Shiners in White/Chartreuse.

I was out on thurs.evening fishing the mud with my youngest daughter and we managed to get 2 fish.A fella pulled into the landing next to us and said he had a good day and pulled about a 23" fish out of the box.The fish are out there just have to get your baits down to them.We were both fishing deep 12'and deeper. The whitebass were up higher. The 2 fish I had were on dj's 180ft back. Some nice marks down near the bottom too.Wish I could have stayed out a little longer but we still had fun.My 6 year old was reeling in one of the boards and a whitebass just crushed it.Good thing she had a good hold of the rod.:)

Took the wife and youngest out for a short trip tonight and had a ball. Kept 8, release about that many more. Reef fishing at its best. Had as many 8 to 14 inchers as 14 to 16's. Best fishing on a dead calm night is always right in the middle of a huge pack of boats that are trolling in 5 fow.... or is it a small reef out in the middle of no where with just the bugs to keep you company?

Sounds like from the weekend tournament reports that the mud bite is well underway. 22 lbs. is a lot of weight. I saw a pretty good bunch of guys off of long point in the mud and I trolled it for about an hour with little success. Lots of marks though.

I was out over the past weekend and did ok. Trolled the mud Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday was pretty slow, Sat. I had a nice 26" 6 pounder that I released of course, and Sunday I got a limit of 14"-15" eyes. All fish caught about 10' down.

fished saturday and sunday. 78 walleyes caught. kept 8 saturday one 17", one 18", and 5 between 20 and 22". trolling the mud. best weekend of walleye fishing this year for me and my partner. we couldn't keep our six line in the water. biggest fish was 25 inches and just shy of 6 lbs. Should have been fishing a tournement. Thank God I only fish for fun.

I was out trolling the mud this afternoon from 4:00-7:30. Got a limit of 15"-18" eyes. Also caught a nice 23.5 inch eye that went back. Be carefull, lots of floating sticks and logs out there.

Fished the mud off calumet Sat eve. Kinda slow for me managed 8 eyes trolling cranks, no one crank better than the others. All good eaters but all still swimming. Went back with a buddy last eve. only caught 4 eyes, though one was a 22", fish still there but didn't want to hit what we had out. Million boats out on the weekend, not bad at all weeknights. Anyone do any good last night the 15th? Or did I just not find active fish.

Fished the mud this morn.near garlic Is.ended the day with 10 eaters in the box and a fat and sassy 28"fish still swimmin. My biggest fish off winnebago so far.Of course the camera was sitting at home on top of the computer.Yeah likely story,I know. But the fish took the glass shad rap in the white or clear whichever you prefer in #5 50ft back.In the last week I've been doing pretty good with this bait.We made one long troll to the east side and had 10-12 fish before the bite quit the last hour.So we went back to our starting point and filled our limit with 2 more fish.Boy the water sure is clearing up.Though there is some clumps of algea showing up.The shad raps were our #1 bait today.Only a couple of fish on wally divers. And 1 on a t-stick fished deep.

What a beautiful morning! Pulled Walley Divers, Ripsticks, Glass Raps and Nitro's, glass got the first fish (your right Risor it is an impressive bait) and a few more in the 14" inch range, then a double of 17's on Nitros. Needless to say Nitro's went back on all rods for the rest of the day! We wound up with many "quality" fish 2 over 20" and about 15 smaller one's. When the wind picked up they shut down and we had to rethink things. The fish went even deeper as we had to move the nitros back 60-80 behind the boards to get action. Otter Street should be good if the wind dies down in the morning!
GOOD LUCK GUYS

Another great day on the pond! Purple Prizm Nitro! Believe it or not, but long lining behind the boat. God only knows how far Chase put the bait back for this one! Its amazing how the tactics from the past still produce, and leave it to the kids to remind you of those non conventional methods!
Good Luck

Well The bite sure died today and from the sounds of it many otter street anglers had the same experience. We did manage to get some smaller fish later in the afternnon about the time all the tourny guys were heading back in.The first hour we had 1 fish in the boat.Headed towards stevens and not 1 fish from Garlic to stevens.Changed things up a bit and finally had some fish going down deeper on #7 & 8 shad raps. The wind picked up again and changed to wally divers way up high and pulled 6 fish in about 15 min. There was no pattern to hone in on so it could have been worse.Ended the day and the 2 guys I had with me kept 8 fish from 14-17"threw back about that many from 11-13"One question for you guys when the wind picks up do you usually go deeper or up higher my pick was up higher,of course it was getting later in the day too.

I take my two and four year old boys fishing from shore at a nice spot just down the street from our house pretty often (3-5 times a week); we catch lots of sheeps, some rockbass, an occasional smallie, and finally yesterday a nice 18" eye. Tonight, I finally went out there at night and now regret that I haven't done so sooner. Put the boys down to bed, was fishing by 10:30pm and catching 'til I came home at 1:00am.

6 - eyes; 10"-15"; 3 on glow jighead tipped with crawler and 3 on a #5 clown husky jerk
5 - catfish; 1 must have gone at least 12# WOW what a fight
3 - sheephead; yes, I actually caught more walleyes than sheephead
? - rockbass; I lost count at 10

Probably not that exciting for most of you, but not having a boat outings like that don't come along too often.

A friend was trolling the mud off Pipe and a little north of Pipe on Friday 6/18, from 11:30 am to 6:30 pm he and his crew caught over 50 walleye, biggest was 4.5 lbs, also one other over 22".

Said they could not keep their lines in the water, running little rippers about 5' down. Also caught the usual sheeps and just a few white bass.

One old report and one new report. Sat. AM was great for numbers, as a buddy and I trolled up over 50 eyes from the west shore shallows. Everything worked, put on baits that were still cherry, and they didn'nt stay that way long. The No. 5 shad rap about 45' back was pretty hot (walleye pattern), also Lil ripper in watermelon about 30' back was pretty good. Today went back and the same area produced one small eye in an hour and a half, YIKES what a difference a couple days can make. Did finally find enough fish futher up the coast toward neenah. Ended up catching 11 eyes total keeping a couple eaters ....largest 15". Most of those again on the shad rap.

Went back to spot from yesterday,(shallow west shore reefs) trolled up 11 eyes with 14" big fish of the day. Good eaters, but am ready to tie into some big girls for a change. Was checked at landing by DNR, they said plenty of limits coming in but no big fish. I did try out in the mud for 2 hrs with nothing but whities to show for it. Where are all the reports? There are an awful lot of boats out for nobody saying anything. Has everyone gone over to lake-links or what? This used to be a good forum for reports, but not so much any more. Need reports good or bad.

Hopefully I will be able to report as soon as the wind dies down. I had a spot out in the mud that was producing last week but with these strong winds lately I haven't been out since. By the way, I am done with lake-link. Too many whiners and trash talkers on there.

Not a report but a heads up there is another tournament this weekend so maybe after the tourny's are done you will see some reports coming in again. The mud bite has died for the moment. But once the weather warms up again the bite should improve. The reefs seem to be the place to get a meal of eaters. The upriver lakes may be better right now but I have not been up there.Another cold front is coming through so maybe after the weekend the weather looks to be warming up again.Keep the reports coming thanks

Fished both days over the weekend including the website tourney. We caught about 25 walleye on Saturday and 35 on Sunday. Only 8 or so sheephead/whitebass. Trolled all cranks, all in the bottom half of the water cloumn. They were all the usual 14-16" fish, no slobs. About 1.5-2 miles off Stockbridge. Vary your speed alot and make sharp turns. Dave S.

We went out this past Sunday morning and trolled the mud for a while. Had 4 keepers from 15- 17 inches and many smaller ones. Got them all on harnesses, couldn't buy a fish on cranks besides the sheephead. Got a few fish on the Gulp worms also.

GO CRANKS! With the water warming up the fish should be back in the top half off the column these week. With the high water I would think they are going to bite thru July this year!

Did the shore fishing thing after the Menasha fireworks tonight and was able to pick up some nice eyes in a couple of hours. Just finished cleaning a 13 1/2", and two 15"s - I know what's for breakfast tomorrow Lost a really nice one on the rocks, I'm guessing 22"-23". Also a couple cats, 2 sheeps, and a rock bass.

I was out in the later part of the morning trolling the mud. Trolled for a couple hours with not much to show for it besides a few small ones and a 16 incher that we kept. Decided to battle the waves and make a move south to a spot that has been producing for us the last few weeks. We had 2 or 3 little ones with in the hour. Finally I hooked into a good fish on the crawler harness that I had long lined behind the boat. Turned out to be a 20 incher. We no more than got that one in the net and the outside board started falling back. My buddy started reeling that one in while I let some line out on the inside board so the lines wouldnt get crossed. Well they ended up getting crossed anyway because another fish hit the inside board while I was letting line out. So we got the second fish (17 incher) netted along with the board it was tangled up with. I started pulling the last fish in hand over hand. I could tell it was a walleye, a pretty decent one too. I told my buddy he better get that mess out of the net because we are gonna need it. He got the mess out just in time to net the 22 1/2 inch eye. I released the big eye and took the other three home for my dad. We had time for one more pass over that spot which resulted in another decent fish on but was lost. That was the most exciting 5 minutes out on bago in a long time. I guess it was worth the rough ride there and back.

Fished the mud Friday from noon till 4 pm. Two dinks and a couple of white bass. Was nice to get out with my kids for a few hours and even though we didn't set the world on fire, we had a great time. Trolled DJ's, Deep Little Rippers and Deep Nitro Shiners all over the water column. Only fish I caught were both on a Deep Nitro Shiner 110' back. Are the fish tending to be up high early and then going down with the heat of the day?

From my expierience I would say they stay up top unless a front or something comes through. I haven't noticed a real pattern as far as time of day versus fish position on the locator. I get most of my marks around ten feet whether its in the morning or the afternoon. So I run most of my baits just above that. I will usually hang one deeper and a couple near the surface just to see if there are any fish up real high.

Suffered my first skunk in over a month last night. I could actually see the eyes glowing in the shallows, but thet wouldn't hit anything. The cold front must have shut them down. Water levels have dropped significantly and they've closed about half the gates at both of the dams.

Just like 2 years ago, Mark! I may have to make a run up, but looking to do the Big Pond for a SalmonFirst outing tomorrow. If the wind blows us off, I may have to retool the boat, and head north for some eye action!

You got that house finished yet?

Tried Winnebago for a second time on Sat. Caught lots of drum and a few small walleyes drifting the reefs in about 8-10ft water. Suspended fish are new to me - how much weight? Do snap weights work? Fish must be 6-10 ft deep? Over how much water? Seems like the lake is pretty structureless aside from the reefs.

Thanks in advance. Hope to get back there a couple more times this summer.

First of all, 'Bago is not much more than a huge fishbowl virtually devoid of special areas that will hold big fish very long. So there is luck involved just to find them big girls and the best advice is to just start somewhere and put on some miles.

Then, if you find them (they will show as long cigar shapes on your sonar), getting them to eat is entirely seperate ordeal.

In catching deeper water suspended 'Bago 'Eyes, try fishing close to the bottom in cold front conditions (I still have a very hard time), and yes, using snap weights or bottom bouncers is best. In moderate weather conditions try concentrating in the center of the water column. And if we get a long period of stable high pressure weather, then try trolling shallow running surface baits as fast as you dare!

As far as fishing the rocks, it's best early morning and late evening, with dark windy days helping to hold the fish longer into the day.

Out of east shore today. Only one 13" eye, drifting jig/crawler in 10 to 12FOW. Lots of slime on top and thousands of small bugs to make it more miserable! Can't believe I was on 'bago wishing for wind and waves!!!! Could not find perch either, only couple sheep. Out from west shore yesterday was only slightly better, couple eyes with 14" biggest, drifting reef edges. Lot of smallmouth over there. Also did not seem near as green, because of prevailing winds I assume. Can't troll yet, still breaking in new motor.

Went out on the west shore last night. Caught a whole mess of fish had two limits of 18 to 15 inch fish in one hour forty five minutes. The first five where in the first 1/2 hour. Same program really, one ounce in-lines 16 to 24 back. speed 1.4 to 1.8.
All fish on harnesess some with crawlers and some with Gulp!. All in all it was a productive night. Still looking for them big girls. Should get interesting tommorrow with the cold front moving in tonight.
