I am fishing a 25000 acre impoundment next week for Muskies and Walleyes. The lake has numbers of walleyes over 10#. I have caught LOTS of 'eyes there on the reefs shallow and on the bars associated with islands, but most are between 15 and 22".

The forage base is warm water whitefish, emerald shiners, and perch. There is pretty good current, and the original river channel is over 40' deep. The water is very murky, clay particulate is stirred up most of the time. Water temps will be in the 60's. Great weedlines, in fact miles of cabbage edges, but I seem to catch smaller fish in the weeds with the exception of an occasional fish over 30" on muskie lures, usually one ar two a trip from our group.

How would you approach this for the BIG 'eyes? BTW, only one line per angler.

Ok, try this again.
3rd times a charm right.
Lost post 2 times now, no idea, other page highjacked.

Look for the open water to have the hogs at this time of year.

Find the white fish, there will be near by.

Large EYES are lazy the bigger and easyer the meal the better.

Crawler harnesses, and cranks, would be my chioce for the open water eyes.

Hope this help a little.

What lake is it anyway maybe someone has been there.

Is it near dryden?

I'd target walleyes after dark using large cranks tossed over weed tops on inside turns and points. #18 Rapala would be first choice followed by smithwicks, Husky jerks, or even smaller grandmas. If there is a mayfly hatch toss small spinner with piece of crawler into weed edge(Lake Erie rig) during the day. Daytime open water fish should show up on electronics if they are out there. Good Luck!!

Any deep structure... you know 15-20' tops breaking off steep to 20-40, 50'? Like the edge of the old river channel? If so:

I'd vertically rig the top of the break with a leech (or two) or night crawler on a floster, in the am.. Then switch to the weed line later in the day with higher sun...throwing 1/4-3/8 jigs - bulked with white plastic and live bait. That is how I'd start out this time of year on a reservoir like you describe.

If there is no clear water,I'd suggest either baits with rattles,or live bait,to start.Find a good concentration of smaller fish, and move out to deeper water, probably bow mount,or driftitng different depths with a slip sinker rig ,(weedless hooks help)would work.My favorite past time for weeds,is to find a patch, that jutts out from the rest,of it,and slip bobber that edge. Most bigger eyes feed along the edge of the smaller school fish, and will sometimes get to shallow water,or feeding area, early in the day,and wait for the forage to bet hearded to them.If I was to pull cranks,it would be along the edges of the weeds,or points, and islands, dropping into considerably deeper water areas.A regular wolf river rig, with a crank, and 6 foot leader is a dynamite trolling tactic, for eyes hanging on edges.Have fun......hafe

Steve,
The only place that I found good size walleyes there were on a reef in a bay, almost due south of the town peir points kind of to it.

There are 2 reefs in the bay and the one to the west is locally known as ten pounder point.

Got camps bigest walleye there for that year and it held till late fall.
Was there in July.

You can scoop leeches up there at night right off the piers, with a baitwell net, if they have a light mounted.
I got 1/2 lb in like 20 mins one night going to check on the boat.

Water was muddy when we were there, so mostly worked reef with leeches and crawlers.
Never tryed for the open water fish, because it was dirty water all week.

Windy and 103 when I was there, white caps all day.

Night fishing will get you laughed at, and the only thing that bites are the billion skeeters, that will carry you
away after dark.

The Day light hours there are longer than here right now, you will have a hard time fishing the whole day.

Might want to go to Danorwick for clearer water.

I was limited in movement because of water in gas, and had to run, on 2 tanks from the camp.
When I changed cans had to head back to camp, fishing only back in thay direction.

Hope you are at a better place than we stayed at, just east of the radio tower.

If you can get on the open water fish following the white fish I bet those will be the piggs.

Hope this helps, Rich

Oh, yea.

I night fish here all the time, nothing after dark there, mayflies every where though.

Tried 3 nights out of 6, cause the wind was not ripping then.

Camp owner said it just doesn't work there.

Thanks guys I will apply the info here startting tomorrow night. I have fished this water for 20 years for Muskies and just don't spend time on Walleyes. This year I will have some extra time, and Sue wants to try the big 'eyes there, too. There are true monsters in there, I have caught them accidentally way over 30" on Muskie lures.

Indian Point Camp sports high speed wireless internet, so I will be reporting all week on the trip. Hope I have some big Ontario 'Eyes to show off.
