Did anyone see the article on the front page. The DOC has put a 22.52% import bond on all japanese motors being "DUMPED" in the USA. I know some guys were whining when Mercury filed this suit in january, But it looks like Mercury was correct. This is a great win for the American worker.

Yep, read the article.

Denny, I remember discussing this with you quite awhile ago, I do stand corrected. The DOC's best interest is the American consumer. With that said I stand by the decision of the DOC. Even with my Gray motor hanging on the back.

What's this going to do to Honda's pricing? There's a chance we wont be seeing silver motors anymore! Honda makes some of the most bullet proof motors and they're already expensive. I hope the DOC looks at each Jap manufactuer seperately and taxes accordingly instead of doing a broad sweep.

I read all the material too, and from a Boat builder marketing/sales Rep's perspective, I have an opinion on this entire affair. I worked a booth for two winters at sport shows trying to sell a US built boat with a US built motor against a US built, but Japanese owned boat and a Japanese built motor. NO other boat in that class was priced in that bracket(not even close), and it cost Tuffy, Warrior, Yar Craft, and even Ranger dearly for a couple seasons. I saw an invoice for a boat and trailer, no power, and can affirm that the outboard was the reason for the predatory pricing. I don't know if that was dumping, but it sure represented a great price on an 80 HP 4 stroke.

The case isn't over yet, that's for sure. I will defer comment on Genmar Holding's response for now. At least the industry in which I work is not boring right now.

Interesting article. I myself am done buying Merc. motors. I have a 2001 125 hp and a 2003 15 hp, and neither one of them runs decent. If I have to pay more for another make of motor in the future, so be it.

Well, I have a 40HP Mercury 4 stroke, a 9.9 Mercury 4 stroke, and a 250 Opti Max XS, and all run flawlessly. This isn't and WON'T be a motor bashing thread. It's a discussion about the issues surrounding the legal case and the response from the industry. Please place your comments accordingly!

I believe this is all foreign motors! If this is a win for Merc maybe they will be re-thinking having 60hp and below motors manufactured in China ya think? I doubt it! Either way this is good news for all American business not just the marine market. Looks like it is going to be an exciting off season!

So GenMar sells Brunswick Lund and Crestliner and is now complaining about Merc's suit? If that was the case why did they sell "Merc" 2 of the biggest boat companies to put thier motors on????

Sorta seems like sour grapes to me.

Now Irwin says whatever he wants because Irwin doesn't need Mercury very bad. Plus---now (post class action suit against Mercury) Irwin will not be sued for libel, either. The vast majority of Genmar's outboard sales were through Lund and Crestliner which Irwin sold, of course. So, like I said, he doesn't need Mercury very bad anymore.
By the way, pricing on Yamaha to dealers has not changed from last week. Yamaha assures it will not, either.
Over 50% of the "dumped" engines were 4 stroke powerheads being sold by Yamaha to Mercury.
I sell both engines and have nothing against either brand. I'm just explaining Irwin's stance...as to my understanding of it, anyway.
There is more here than meets the eye, fellows.
I doubt this is over.

This is a post in answer to a post on another message board, so I thought I would post it here to, just for grins.

Brunswick RUINED Mercury, MotorGuide, and associated companies? No, I don't think so. MotorGuide had an outdated, poorly built product that was getting absolutley thrashed by the competition, and Mercury has taken serious measures to correct that as soon as time, product development and release allows.

Look at Mercury's market share. Please.

ALL the outboard builders had some trouble meeting the EPA 2006 requirements in develpoing outboards in time to meet the deadlines. OMC? (wow, what a mess that was) HPDI had troubles as well.

In part, it's the sheer NUMBER of Opti Max big block motors out there in comparison to the others that creates part of the problem. If, for example 12% of a total product line had warranty problems due to let's say, fuel rail and ecm compatability, and there are thousands of that model in service, the resulting returns will have much more impact than if the same trouble occured to a 12% group of only a couple thousand.

Mr. Jacobs is a boat builder group owner. The comment in a thread on another board about a monolopy at Brunswick is funny, Genmar sold them three companies who build aluminum, and one that builds Yahts, so wouldn't Genmar have been guilty of monolopy before the sale?

What is a boat builder doing testifying and attempting to influence the outcome at all in this issue, unless said builder has a VERY strong vested interest in the outcome? Genmar doesn't own, build or create outboard motors, they sell and build boats. BOATS, not motors.

The government agencies charged with deciding this matter will do so based upon the facts, not who can scream over the associated noise the loudest. Facts will bear this out, not opinions, so I am going to wait for the conclusion of the suit to draw any conclusions as to it's overall merit.

Didn't Mr. Jacobs admit to untruths in his original testimony? Doesn't that lead one to the "Are you lying now, or were you lying then?" question? The libel comments on another board and reasoning about the timeline for his commentary don't make sense either, Mr. Jacobs has openly attacked Mercury MANY times in the past. Testimony is testimony, if one takes the oath, one had better be ready to tell the truth, not the version that suits one's business interests at the time.

The tone of Mr. Jacobs letter is sometimes sophmoric at best. His reference to the Opti Max engine and associated comments are almost Clintonesque in design, begging one to "Look over THERE!!" instead of at the facts of the matter. Genmar sold an awful large quantity of Mercury Opti Max motors during and after the problems were discovered in the outsourced parts, etc; if they KNEW the quality issue was so pressing, and were SO upset about the issue, one would think they would have not sold a single one so they might protect their customers from such a horror.

This letter is quintessential Jacobs at his best. It's a PR statement, and an attempt to use his rather impressive reach to influence the outcome of a suit that he is not a party to. One thing for sure, it's rarely boring in the Marine Industry.

i personally have nothing against anyone that has a foreign motor, or car for that matter, but these are the same people that are going to be crying when they lose their jobs or get laid off because of foreign competition....   buying all these things from other countries hurts the middle class american worker like most all of us are...  personally I'll go with domestic as long as it is feasible

Love the Patriotism idea but get real! Here's an FYI for ya, we now import more food than we export! So unless your fending for yourself and living off the land in Alaska, Your never gonna get away from it (Although the fishin pole or Line your gonna need to take with ya will probably have been made overseas!) Buy Now, Sparking the economy and Love life.
