Location: Manitowoc, WI | This reflects what I've believed and practiced for years. I've never bought into the "hook rusting out" theory, and I carry a set of sidecutters because of this. I'd like to think that most or all the fish I've released after cutting the hook deep inside the fish's gut have lived, but I have no proof to offer. Generally, it isn't that difficult to cut near the barb and back the hook out, which is what I try to do.
Remember, this isn't limited to just tourney guys either. For those of us who fish Winnebago looking for suitable sized table fare, this has been an issue for quite a few years. Thanks for the article, Whatchausin. |

Location: Milw, WI | Never bought the it will rust out line myself.
Careful extraction was always my method.
Remove it If I can , take home to eat if real bad.( meeting limits of course)
I have caught many fish with hook and line hanging from there mouth.
I always thought it broke off some bodys line. |

When I read this article, I thought about the many times I was told, "Oh, don't worry, it'll rust out.", and the many fish that don't survive after being mishandled in trying to get hooks and lures out. How beneficial it would be if the thousands of fishermen and women nationwide could all read this! |
