| Local dealer has a new in the crate non-current year 2002 or 2003 can't remember which. 150hp V-max HPDI. I am considering repowering my Ranger 690 and keeping it for a while... Currently has a 96 Mariner/merc 175 EFI with rebuilt power head 18 mos ago.
Why I am I considering a repower job?
1. Have yet to find another layout other than Lund 1900 Pro-v LE dual consol that I like... I won't spend 30k+ on a boat, just too hard for me to justify and I don't like payments.
2. My 690 is paid for and I have the cash to make the motor upgrade. Even selling my 690 and buying a new-layout Tuffy for mid 20's or a used Pro-V will cost me another 10K...Twice what I will have to spend on the motor upgrade.
3. Improved fuel economy and new motor with 3 year warranty, figure I can run the boat another 4-5 years and still get decent resale on it.
I have never owned a Yami but have heard they are a very reliable motor...
Looking for feedback from those who have owned one..pro's and con's...
Appreciate the help.

| To answer the Yamaha HPDI question. We have sold many over the past four model years and have been very pleased with their trouble-free reliability. They have been great engines.
Nothing I hate more than an engine that gives my customers problems, because that translates into stress at our shop. These engines have not caused us stress. This is good.

| Why not keep the 175 EFI? These motors are very dependable, even though it had a new powerhead 18 months ago. That was a pro owned boat, correct? And he had the powerhead replaced, not you? Have you had any problems with it? And, unless you are WOT, the EFI's were pretty good on gas. Not great, but good.
I think the 150 would be underpowering that boat, compared to what you have now. Yammy are good motors, but I think your performance would suffer with that 150, not be better.
You could always buy my boat! hehehe You said you liked the layout. For muskie's, it's better than the ProV's and that big wide gunnel!

| Forgot I posted this here as well as on the Muskie board.
Shep... my boat was not pre-owned by a tourney pro. The guy was retired and had fished several RCL's as a co-angler and decided to buy a new Ranger so if he wanted to fish the RCL as a pro angler he would have title to a 4 yr. old or newer rig for the bonus bucks. Personally I think this was the reasoning he gave his wife...I think he just needed to justify a new Ranger to himself and his wife..:)
I like setback consols like on my 690 or the Pro-v's or in Tuffy's 1990 Esox. Why.. because there's enough room in front of the consol or consols for my Lakewoods boxes. Much easier to change baits, just bend down and you're there. No getting off the deck and walking to the back of the boat and I hate those tube things guys put around their pedistal posts.
I am pretty much down to two decisions.
1. Keep the 690 the way it is.
2. Buy one of the new layout Tuffy's. ( I had a small amount of input on the changes and so far I like what I see)
My whole reasoning behind this was two-fold. If I change rigs I am going into a dual consol. If I keep my 690 I was toying with the idea of repowering it to take advantage of Four Stroke or Direct Inject technology and the opportunity Greg presented on the non-current HPDI most certainly sparked my interest.
Thanks to the Yamaha guys on the feedback.. For what it's worth since this original post I have since purchased a 2004 25hp Yami 4 stroke for my Alumacraft I use for waterfowl hunting and float trips. I have only had it on the water twice but so far I am very impressed... If I were ordering a new larger horse power motor today I would have a hard time not buying Yami or Suzi.
