Post from LL by Packrat on his 8/11 trip out on the Trawler.....

Hey there all you Lake Winnebago Bangers..just thought Id tell ya what happened this morning out on the ole 53 ft. Calumet Trawler..well its October 11 th and we set sail out on the Bago....opps, sorry I got my months screwed up, OR DID I???? HOLY CRAP SHE WAS A WICKED MOTHER OUT THERE THIS MORNIN!!!!!!! When you can see your breath on the 11th of freekin AUGUST as in "Dog Days Of AUGUST" (dog days for Siberian Huskeys maybe but not even in Wisconsin is it to be that cold this time of the freekin year!!) But I Loved It!!! Must be that Swedish blood in me..;O) but seriously when you looked at the sky and felt the air you never in a million years would have guessed we were talking AUGUST!! ...when is that global warming thing supposed to hit??? Anyway.... the only day that the boys got out so far is Monday..yesterday was too nasty and today was too nasty but they decided we can do it if we have too so WE DID. Rough as a cob the only section we could do was the NEENAH AREA!! Thats a LONG haul even on a calm day but thats where we HAD TO GO.. it was a refreshing ride to say the least!!! Once again we had some real nice fish in the net..nothing huge but a good varity none the less. Seems to be a nice perch hatch so far..KEEP THAT IN MIND.."SO FAR" I dont want to lead anybody on here just yet until all the testing has been done and that wont be compete until Oct. but things look pretty good for the perch, whitebass and the walleye!! And the fact I love eating everyone of those species makes me drool a bit!! Not a whole bunch of sheephead YOY (Young Of the Year) today..but things are running late with some species..the sheephead is one the gizzard shad is another, but here again..the gizzard shad can pull off a good hatch yet this summer..lets hope they do. The trout perch seem to be holding there own its too early to say if they had an awesome year yet..but lets hope for the sake of what we have coming up in walleye numbers we have more then enough to feed the ones that are eating and growing like nuts!! We caught a few walleye YOY today that were so dang big and fat already that the DNR boys are speculating that those little buggers spawned earlier in the Fox River or reefs.. they sure were fat and juicy for being so young!! But SO FAR with only 2 days into the Trawling Season we already have 250+ walter yoy in the cooler..thats absolutely fantastic!! We only accounted for 63 of them today but seeing that a 4 YOY per pull is a REAL GOOD average. If things continue (and my personal beliefs say they will) we will have pulled off another outstanding year class to bless our Fry Daddys with for years to come!! We made 9 pulls today and caught 63 of them..thats a 7 fish average..Monday they caught close to 200 on 9 pulls..you do the math. Thats ROCKIN !! Now as the season go's on theres going to be less per pull, always is.. because towards October the youngsters roam around more (closer to shore) and strap on the feed bag. But every thing from the warm wet spring we had until the day was done today, tells me we had an awesome hatch!! Last years YOY dont look so YOY anymore!! A good wack of them have grown to 9+ inches already!! And boy do they love to eat!!! Thats where we need to pray that the forage base continues to grow in the Bago..(you know those Goatheads so many of you love to bounce off your motor or with your fingers ripping out a gill or 2 before releasing??) Them fish are a big part of why we have the amount of fish we do in the system. Bottom Line, their YOY help feed the very fish you fry. So give that some thought before you kill and release your next sheephead ;O) We had some real nice Saugers in the mix today.. nice 7-9 inchers from last years hatch. That ice fishing savior is on its way back guys.. we will see the day when we will be releasing to the greasings the Winnebago Sauger. My hope is in the next 5 years. I really think that might happen, keep your fingers crossed. But as the info comes to me I will report how the ole Bago is doing, unless there is a cancilation today will be the only time I will be able to get out..the list is full!! I cant help but wonder if the postings on L-L has brought a few guys to give the DNR a call to volunteer!! I know it has. But thats a great thing. Of all the days I was going to be able to help I was hoping that the day I worked we would be right out in front of the mouth.. because thats the mother load of fish to count this time of year.. but I hope that if a fellow L-Ler is helping that day, I hope he/she will post how they did. Because I KNOW you'll be busy that day!! Sure is fun getting Slimmed by all them fish!! The Bago is one hell of a body of water..I hope to fish the heck out of it until Im 90!! Take care everyone, and eat a sheephead. Packrat
