Excerpt from the Dubuque Telegraph Herald:
by M.D. KITTLE
It looks like the convention and visitors bureau is close to inking a deal that would land the Cabela's National Team Championship, slated for Memorial Day Weekend in conjunction with the Grand Excursion.
The walleye fishing tournament, sponsored by outdoor outfitter Cabela's, brings together 250 two-angler teams from across the country competing for a $145,000 prize. The event draws national media coverage and thousands of spectators.
Eric Banks, Cabela's tournament director, said the company and the chamber are close to signing a deal that would bring the championship to Dubuque - marking the first time the annual tournament has been held on a river system.
"We found an enthusiasm and willingness of the Dubuque Chamber of Commerce," Banks said. "This will be a great tie together for us as well as the city's (Grand Excursion) event."
In fact, it was the prospect of the big-traffic river celebration that attracted Cabela's to Dubuque in the tournament site selection process.

Location: Rhinelander | Doesn't matter where it is, really. Someone will win, and there will be fish caught, just about anywhere they choose. There ARE places where there shouldn't be Walleye Tournaments. I remember the MWC Championship on Minnetonka, for example.... |

Location: Chicago IL. | The point I was makeing is that Cabelas has said it would always be held the 2nd weekend in June. Alot of people that qualifed already have taken this time off. I`m not sure if i`m going or not but I got my fingers crossed. I`m not knocking Cabelas , I think they do a great job at there championships, Im just confused about the dates. I`m sure there formal announcement will explain everything.

| Denver,
I've qualified, but passed up the chance a couple times now. I think it would be fun, but my guide work gets going pretty good about the time of the championship each year. |
