Fair chance I will be rigging a new boat this spring. I have had Minn-Kota for the past 15 years but am thinking of switching to MotorGuide for the following reason.

Electric Steering so I can run pedal to back of the boat when I guide.

Minn-Kota does not offer their Power Drive series with a scissors style bracket. I hated fighting with my old ones which is why I switched to the Maxxum. As a musky fisherman I often have the need to get the trolling motor up out of the way in a hurry and prefer the scissors style for that reason..

I am only interested in the DS series of Motorguide I will not use their sonars and do not need the "bottom follow" features of the old Pinpoint technology.

Wondering if any of you guys have run one of the new Motorguides and how you like it..? Reliability is my number one concern.

Thanks for you help,

Mark Hintz

After running both Minnekota and Motorguide bow mounts in the past. I will be sticking with the Minnekota in the future......motorguide the motor is good but the motor mount bracket is junk.

I've used Pinpoint since they came out.I've since switched to Moterguide.Same styles, same brackets etc. Very satisfied, besides they're getting better.Although not problem free,no brand is,features built-ins,remote steer & power well worth it.I'll have a new one on my skeeter agin this year.

Mark-
I must agree with Brad, MotorGuide has really stepped up to the plate with their new products (all components are now sealed in water-tight housings and are solid state). They have also located the touchy electronics above the water line. I had no failures in 2004, although after 120 days on the water I had some wear on the nylon stow / deploy cable. I also used to fight the MK mounting system and have returned to the very dependable and durable Gator Mount system.

I used the PTSv last year and was surprised by the quiet and speedy (read responsive) aspect of the electric steer feature. I had a couple of bass buddies check it out and after a very short learning curve they stated the responsiveness was within milliseconds of a true cable system. They were impressed and that is hard to do to those bass guys!

Make sure you order the foot pedal extension cable ( the one that is included is for bow operation only). Also watch out for a wireless remote control that MAY be released this year. However, I think you will enjoy the foot pedal operation at the rear since you can anticipate the direction by pedal location (emulates a cable drive forward to back foot pedal). You will no longer have to look at the motor head to determine direction.

I believe some DS models other than the PTSv will have a universal sonar available also. Like all digital steering systems, once the motor is pointed at 5 degrees off the bow, it stays 5 degrees off the bow, no floppiness similar to the cable systems.
Hope this helps,

There is a MOTORGUIDE 82lb. BOWMOUNT ELECTRIC MOTOR DC82FB on sale on ebay. I have the same motor on my Triton and was very pleased with it. It is like having the foot control of the old cable controls with the ease of a powerdrive.
