| I am looking at buying a '97 F-150 with this engine, but not sure how powerful it is for towing. Anyone pull their boat with this engine? Does it have enough power? What kind of mileage do you get when your not towing? Thanks for any input. Dave S | |

| I've got one with a standard. Worked fine for my 16 1/2 footer but my new boat is an alumacraft trophy 185 with a f115 4 stroke and 9.9 kicker and it is a little too much. wish I had the 8 now. My motor has never gotten very good gas mileage, maybe 17 mpg even on the hwy. But it is real bad with the boat behind it, maybe 10-12. Might be different with an automatic also. It has California emissions which I will be sure not to get again which may make a difference, I'm sure it does with the mileage cause friends are telling me they get 22 mpg with theirs. Don't get me wrong though I love that motor, 154,000 miles and never did a thing to it but plugs and wires at 125.000 and an alternator. Actually the entire truck has been great, only other things I've done to it were outer tie rods and lower ball joints. The trucks never seen the inside of a garage except my own. | |

| I also have a Ford F-150 manual with the 4.6 V8
I tow a 1750 Crestliner Fishawk, and if I'm not climbing a mountain pass its fine. Unfortuantly I live in Washington and have to travel over the pass anytime I decide to go walleye fishing. Its slow going up the pass.
So, be aware that even the smaller V8 is sluggish.

Run a '97 with that engine and pulls my 17'11" Fazer fine. Had it loaded down good during Labor Day and it was a bit sluggish, but nothing terrible. For running out to Bago and back with regular fishing gear in tow, no problems at all. I've got over 132,000 miles on mine and it still runs great, knock on wood! I think I'm getting around 14-15 mpg while towing and about 18 on the highway normally. Great truck, can't wait to get an '04 or '05 this coming fall though! Good luck with your purchase. | |

| Thanks for the info guys. I opted for something just a touch bigger (V-8 4.6 Triton). I am pulling my boat now with a Chevy 4.3L, and it is OK for local stuff, but I wanted a little more power for longer hauls. I know the 4.6 isn't a monster by any means, but I also have to drive it 22 miles round trip to work everyday. Gas ain't cheap! Thanks again. Dave S | |
