OK, first off i admit i'm am NOT a walleye angler. i am a true newbie/amature compared to you guys...but, i thought i'd come here as a reference point, hopefully get a few ideas and collect a little info.

I'd like to take my son to canada for a week this summer (or fall, or spring) to go fishing. i dont even know what months are best for walleye fishing(2005 trip). I have been walleye, bass, pike and musky fishing. i do know how to fish, i just dont fish for walleyes as there are not good walleye waters close to where i live....but i have been walleye fishing before and had success.

So, would any of you guys, or gals, be able to make any possible suggestions on a lake or resort to take my son fishing for a week. If the camp offers a guide, i'd probably hire a guide for one, two or 3 days to get a feel of what we are doing for the rest of the week.
I'm happy to go to a place that has pike/bass too...that stuff doesnt matter too much too me. we live in a big city, so we'd like to really get away from it all, get to place where there are not many resort or houses. i'd like place w/ lots of action to keep my son happy for a week.

if you have any suggestion or experinces that you could share, that would be nice. i'm not asking for your honey holes, just some suggestions on where i could take my son for a good time and to catch some walleyes. thanks for your time.
if you do not want to share the info publically on this thread, email me privately:
[email protected]

thanks again.

I guess the main questions would be:

how much do you want to spend?
do you want a fly-in or drive-in?
Are you supplying the boat?
You cook or do you want them to cook for you?

My first suggestion would be Lake of the Woods. I have stayed on an Island Called Kings Island and have absolutely loved it. I will be back there again some day. Check out http://www.kingislandlodge.com/

They also do a great job with kids. If your son gets bored with fishing there is swimming, kayaking, canoeing etc.

I have stayed at camps where it's cook your own food, $250-$325 a week. that's cheap for a week.
i have stayed at place closer to $600-$900 a week.
So, i'd stay wherever...i dont really care.

My son will be 9 this spring.
I'm thinking i'll probably fly plane to canada, then we could either fly in or rent a car to take to lodge. with that being said, i'd be renting a boat.

Cooking can go either way, i'm fine to cook, or they can do it. i dont really care.
i'm open to more suggestions guys! thanks again.

hey sunshine, I also have been to Kings Island, several yaars ago. I also would go there again.

fishing dad, I have girls, but my buddies have boys. I would consider what a 9 year old boy's tolerance is for fishing for 5-7 straight days in the bush. My buddies always said the best trips at that age group was when near a town to go see and do some other things, even if for a few hours. Maybe do a fly-out from a camp for a 1 day trip. Maybe stay around Kenora, but can be too commercialized. Definitely get a guide, from what you posted. Maybe go to Souix Narrows, Vermillion Bay or Dryden. These towns are on quality multi-species lakes, plenty to chose from. good luck

When I was in Jr. College I went to Ontario with a professor who was working with the Dept. of Ministries. He was helping with a study on survival rates of walleyes caught on barbed and barbless hooks. We caught millions and millions of eyes. The northern pike population is outstanding as well.

Great place to go if you want a fly in experience.

Well,
If you're taking your son I'll assume that you will need to go during June, July or August (because of School). If you like muskie fishing I'd suggest being there for their opener which is either the 2nd or 3rd weekend in June. If also been there 3rd week in August and fishing was fine. I still prefer June however.

This Island has excellent guides. I would recommend that you go out with Larry the first couple of days. If money was no object I’d take your son for a one day fly-in. The resort will make all arrangements for you and will take you to one of their lakes.

They’re great people with unbelievable beauty all around them.

Another suggestion is Indian Point Camp, on Lake Wabigoon. One can fly into Dryden, which is a few miles by blacktop road to camp. The fishing for big Pike is almost unbelievable, the walleyes plentiful and up to trophy size, and the bass fishing excellent. Muskies don't get much bigger than what can be found there. The camp is great, owners very nice, and the boats rented there adequate. Our MuskieFIRST group will be there over the second week of July next year, so if you are interested in taking that week, you'll have lots of company and plenty of open boat seats with some pretty good sticks, too.

FD,

Mike has a good suggestion in that you need to know realistically what your son's patience level is and what you expect from this vacation. I've taken my two boys to Canada drive in lakes several times and I would rate the quality of fishing just below what other entertainment activities are available for him to do when you aren't on the water. We went to a place on Lake Panache where the fishing was decent, but the other activities were outstanding, and the boys had a blast. A beach, a canoe and kayak were on standby for kids use, plus volleyball, pick-up baseball games with other kids, frisbee, etc.

All kids are different. My kids (at 9 years of age) would do 2-4 hours of actual fishing at a time (depending on the catching, weather, etc) before I felt it was pushing their limits. The one thing you don't want to do is keep them in the boat all day, bored and complaining. That will put them off fro fishing for a long time.

If I'm fishing with "the guys" in Canada, it's 12-14 hours (at least) of fishing daily. With a young kid, you should probably expect considerably less. Hope you have a great time.

Sioux Narrows is another great place. Crawfords has a nice resort there, and there are about a dozen others in the area. Great guides, good fishing, and crystal clear waters.
