| Does anyone know how many teams are in it this year?
team #169 |

|
| As an approximation, the first 75 numbers and the final 75 numbers "fish alone" for a period on each day......I'd take either. Recall order reverses on day two. Also curious how many they took this year. |

| Number I heard, was 330+. + would be the teams that postmarked on the 1st but didn't get there early. there's a couple teams from MN and such that they figured it would go up a couple of boats. |
|
|
|
| So much for "300+10" Wonder how big they're going to let this thing get? Anyone know of any other "major" walleye tourney that takes as many entries? Any thoughts on whether there needs to be a hard cap, and how that cap could be implemented if necessary? |

| xxl, personally I don't have an issue with the size of the tourney even if it would get larger. But Otter Street would like to keep the size in check. I was told if it got much larger than last years (343 boats) that they were going to take returning team preference. meaning that new teams might not get in. This doesn't seem to be an issue this year.
So to answer your question, yes, Otter Street would like to keep it from getting any bigger. Mainly so they can keep the tourney well organized.

| Good to know that they're keeping an eye on it. I would also have "organizational" concerns if it got much bigger. Does anyone know of a larger walleye tourney? This thing might have become The Grandaddy of Them All, size wise. Also think that the shotgun start by flight should be reexamined. It can get pretty hairy when the flare goes off...even after the extension of the staging area. Would hate to see a bad accident force the change. As they say.....an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. |

| Payout should be increased with more boats, but it is not. |
|
|
|
| Is that fact? That would explain a willingness to grow the numbers allowed. |

Location: Omro,Wi. | I'll agree that the "Shot-Gun" start is a very bad idea.A couple of years back,we actually had a boat run into the back us on take-off.I quess they didn't see the 20' with the 250hp. on it? With the room in the bay, they could very easily let one at a time go.Don't know why they have not done it yet?The last time I fished merc.nationals we left according to numbers. We should bring this up at the meeting. |

| Received my entry yesterday. I also would like to see the payout increased as they allow more teams in. It would be alot safer if it were a single file start instead of the shotgun they have now. |

Location: Oshkosh, Wisconsin | I heard they had 339 teams and expected a couple more stragglers...
Shotgun start is kinda cool to watch, but it is dangerous. I'd like to see a single file start, but for reasons other than safety... |

Location: Appleton wi | No one says you have to shot gun with everyone. Last year i gave the shotgunners a 20 sec headstart and kinda just layed low didnt have to worry about zig zagging thru everyone.

Location: Neenah, WI | Sunshine, the boat number doesn't matter. It's the numbers on the big board Sunday afternoon that count. See you in the payline.
As for you Jayman, with that new boat of yours running too close behind me you may just get a little wet. Come on Spring Valley.
My thoughts on the shotgun start are mixed. Does anybody remember back in the mid 80's when we took off and a Bayliner came through the pack going North to South? THAT was exciting. Last year the guys next to us had a 90 HP and he was surrounded by 225 and 250 HP's. If drivers would realize their limitations it could be better.
I'm not positive on the payout. Last year with 340 I think they paid down a little farther. I think if they could get some corporate CASH support they could sweeten the payoff for the top 20. Our best finish was 17th a couple of years ago and our check wasn't anywhere near what Mercury Nationals pays. I'll say this though, Otter Street is the best run tournament I've ever fished. With that many boats you have to admit that it goes pretty well. All the volunteers at the launch deserve our thanks.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!! |

Location: Menasha, Wis. | I have fished Otter Street for many years, and agree with Dale that this is the best run tournament out there. The days of a tight pack of 100 boats doing a shotgun start are over, but that sure was one heck of an adrenaline rush. From the shoreline, I was told it was very impressive - 100,000+ horsepower turning the mouth of Millers Bay upside down!!!
One of the reasons that Otter Street is so popular, is that it has always tried to payback 20% of the field - better than most tournaments. Last year with 343 teams, they opted to sweeten the pot for the top ten positions instead of paying down to the 68th position. I wish they would restructure the payouts for the top ten and still pay 20% of the field. A couple of years ago, a team I know took 10th place and received $1,000. That team beat more than 290 other teams in two days of competition and a $350 entry fee to only get $1,000 back --- as Bob from Quizno's would say " thats just not right".
I am not trying to put any type of negative criticism on the Otter Street tournament or the great organization that it is. I am just hoping that as this tournament continues to grow in popularity, that it makes some minor adjustments to the payout structure.
The personal satisfaction of cashing a check at such a large tournament and fishing against many of the best fisherpeople on Lake Winnebago is awesome!!!!
Hoping to be in the payoff line with the rest of you contestants --- team 172.
Happy fishing to all |

| Let's keep in mind that it's a $240 entry fee, with other fees attached for a grand totoal of $350. And YES, the best organizied tourney I've fished to date. |

Location: West Bend WI,53090 | In 2003 my team took 14th place the payout was $700.00.In 2004 my team took 7th place the payout was $1800.00.Which was only $100.00 increase over 7th place in 2003 while all the payouts below the top ten went up by more.I don't understand since the tournament is getting larger it is that much harder to get on top.The payouts should reflex that.By the way the payout for 14th went up alot more in 2004 than what it was in 2003.I hope they look at ajusting the payouts in 2005.Good luck to everyone in the tournament this year.See you on the water. boat 271 |
