I have spring break the week after Easter. Just wondering if you guys think the ice will be off the river by then. I can't wait to get the boat on the water. Any help would be appreciated. Water levels still looking good for a good spring run?

This has been a wierd March. I don't know thew average date for Ice out, as I didn't really care until this year. I am looking forward to hitting the river a lot this year, and can't wait for it to open up.

I've travelled over the Butte Bridge several times the past week, and the amount open water east is increasing daily. I think a couple days of higher temps will bust her open. Hopefully that will be soon!

Ok, its 11 am thursday the 17th. There is a very large and wide black area on the wolf river extending all the way from fremont to orihula, even after the temps last night there is water that did not refreeze last evening on top of the ice in the black area. Just down stream from the new bridge in fremont there is a big crack on the east side that the ice is now pulling away from. We will see whats happening after the precipatation that will come in the next 2 days.

Saturday the 19th, after the big snow fall. Looking in Fremont the river maintained its 1/2 openess and the river areas down stream that were black and wet remain black and wet. There simply is not much Ice left on the stretch from fremont to orihula. Its still covering but its thin. Monday I will post again.

Monday, 230 pm the river is slowly but surely with this warm sun we have today, opening up. There is 1/2 the river that looks like it could go right now and there is open spots all over it. There is a lot of runoff going in right now. The gill landing area is open from the waupaca downstream along the launch side and its getting worse every minute. Maybe we will get a nice easter weekend surprise and she will be open.

Tuesday the 22nd of march. The river is opening at a steady pace from fremont down river. I have not been farther up to check but the river is better than 1/2 open down here and there was a boat that just went by breaking the ice by sending rollers into the frozen stuff. There is ice chunks coming down at a steady pace now. It wont be long now, she's giving up!! I will check more and give a report on weds.

Thanks for the updates on the Fremont conditions.

Did a little snooping myself yesterday afternoon....I checked the river in the Hortonville Stephensville areas. It'll be another week or so for the ice to let loose in this area.

Denny, I'm still twisting the wife's arm to get out on easter for a few hours. Talk to ya later.

Boy, after what I sen today, easter on the wolf just looks like my own little pipe dream. It opens a little more each day but the remaining ice is thick. I was through shiocton today and shes tight as is the embarrass and the waters in newlondon. Last evening drove to gills, very little open. Maybe lucky if we are out by the 2nd at this rate.

Looks like depere sunday jay, or does anyone know about oshkosh launches?

Denny,
sounds good...I have a source for launching boats in oshkosh. Let's see how the weather plays out......I'd still like to spank some wolf river eyes instead of Fox river eyes.

I might check it out tomorrow to get a birds eye view.

Latest report....

Checked ice from New london to Orihula. The boys are lining up the ice with tip-ups in some stretches in New London County X area. My advice, if you do not know the river in this area STAY OFF. There are patches of open water on bends and in some eddys. There is also some wet shorelines in this area. BRING A SPUD if you must fish.

Gills landing has a launch open but VERY limited travel on the river. There is a large sliver of open water fed from the waupaca river.

Fremont to Orihula is very largely open with lots of ice to line the shorelines...the brave souls that attempt to fish this. I ask you use common sense and don't plan on anchoring. There is too much ice coming down river.

At Orihula it is locked up again. there is two minor spots open from what appears to be some old ice fishing holes.

My sugestion.....give it a week boys and gals.

Monday at noon the river is basically wide open in froont of Fort Fremont Marine. The river at gills is piled up with ice this am but opening quickly. I will check orihula this pm and post tuesday. I am betting we should be able to travel quite a bit of water by this weekend. The run off in the marshes is really starting to build and the river has rose about 1 foot in 2 days.

Hey stacker you could put a big boat in by Hwy 156 but triple C you would need a nice river boat.It gets shallow up there.

Tuesday, March 29th, 1.30pm as of now you can navigate between gills landing and the island below orihula. There is a pile of ice and I am sure it will move soon. Be careful running fast as there are lots of bergs that will send you for one hell of a ride. Its fishable for the wide eyed and alert fisherman only. By the weekend things should improve so I will post one more time thursday on this.
