Location: NW Illinois | Just wondering if anyone could get me started on Pool 8. I've never fished it, but may make a trip that way soon. Can I expect to find fish on wings, sloughs, or will they be scattered? Trolling, jigging, rigging, what should I prepare for? Thanks!!!

Location: Rochester, MN | Yes, Yes, and Yes! My opinion is that it depends when you show up. But as for this time of year and thoughout the summer period you can find walleyes to be occupying wingdams and sloughs depending on the flow. We all know that this is the time of year when the fish get real hungry and deservedly so after all the running around they do in the spring and because they typically need rest after the spawn.
The baitfish are coming on now and all the other inhabitants of the river that walleyes love are also growing in numbers every day. So outside of some cold fronts or turbulent and muddy water the bite is fine and will be fine for awhile now. As far as location. Wingdams are hard to beat but you also have to remember that there are good wingdams and some that for me just will not produce. Plus this time of year you have to share with other anglers so the fish get pressure on these dams particularly on the weekends. On pool 8 I traditionally do better in some sloughs that I like to troll crankbaits in or drag bait in. At least that is the way it has been the last couple of seasons.
If you do come here try to fish during the week. There are alot of pleasure crafters here in the summer and it can get pretty crazy. Start by getting some sort of pool 8 map. If youre going to go it alone(meaning not hire someone) I recommend this time of year putting in at the 7th st. landing and slowly nosing around checking out wingdams and sloughs. Also talk to the local bait shop workers. The guys at Ace Sportsland on the south side are pretty straight shooters when it comes to fishing info. Talk to Ron or Brad and tell them I told you to stop in. As soon as I can get in a new rig(getting antsy) hopefully this season, I will be available for guiding again so thats another option!
