Heros come from the men AND the ladies strong and not so strong, from the brave, and those not so brave; the difference between a hero and the rest of us is the fact the hero was able and willing to step up and do what needed to be done without concern for personal safety.

Thousands have died or suffered permanent injury for our freedom in conflicts around the globe. Without their ultimate sacrifice, we would not be living with the freedoms we have today. Memorial Day, please take off your hat, hum a few bars of taps and then perhaps the Star Spangled Banner, bow your head a moment, and resume fishing, because those who have fallen would want it that way.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday!

Steve well put, thanks....This past week, I saw the American Idol Finale. They showed various contestants from this past season, many meant to be funny/entertaining. Disgusting to see one woman who had NO apparent talent to sing, trying her own version of the Star Spangled banner. DISGUSTING. Worse, FOX TV found it entertaining as they aired a few moments of that crap.

When in the service Memorial Day was a proud day for all of us who served. During my whole career I would cherish the poignant day for what it meant and for what it represents for all that came before me and ones that have given life since my days of service ended.

I pray my brothers and sisters who serve today come home safely and thank them also for serving in the military protecting the rights of America and all it stands for.

I am a proud Navy Veteran and thank God for the good fortunes the service provided for me when in and for the rest of my life. My experiences were vital to who I am and wish the ones that are in today’s service come home to experience America’s greatness. It is also in my prayers that next year we are not mourning one of the family members of Walleye First that are serving our country on this holiday of honoring past and future Hero’s.

For a guy (such as myself) who does a lot of both writing and talking, and prides himself with being able to explain things so they are understood. I find my mind almost blank trying to think how to explain what I want to say about this subject.

As I grow older, I find myself thinking more about what certain holidays are about, versus how much fun I can have on that extra day off from work or obligations. During my school and working years, seldom did I ever think or care about what the holiday involved or why it was even given holiday status. All I knew was that I had an extra day to goof off, fish or hunt and cared little about the history, implied meanings or tributes to the people or divine entities they were supposed to honor.

No matter what your political beliefs, our brave soldiers, sailors and airmen are still in harms way, and dying for our freedoms every day in several foreign lands. Ours may be the only Country in this world, where a big part of it's inhabitants are worried about rather the weather will be O.K. this weekend for their fishing or camping trip. Take a minute this weekend to at least think of how lucky we are to live in this Great Country, maybe even to remind your kids why they got this long weekend off from school and who died giving it to them. Thank you active duty and Vet's for your service to us and Country. God bless you.
