I'm running 87 octane, I found it was the number six plug that was flowed. I also found that the spark plugs dropped from $19.99 to only $10.00. This helps greatly, in changing the plugs every year as my mechanic advices.

I never had a problem like this until I ran Yamaha motors. Not saying anything bad about them at all. Do this: take your plugs out mid-season and end of season, put them in your shop vise (threads up). Clean them up with a wire brush - I use one in my drill, but it really doesn't take that much. If anything is where it's tough to get at, soak them in diesel for a day before you brush them. I don't believe that plugs really go bad in a season and need to be replaced all the time. Look at the plugs that get 100k in todays vehciles. I've used same plugs 3 rys now by doing this.

I hate to say this....but no one else has.

If it is the same plug #6.
It is a deeper problem.
Contact your dealer and get it checked out.

A few fixes have been different thermostat.

For this one You will need to get it check, it is not right.

Swampbuck, Have them check the thermostat. The second day of Otter street, I had the same thing happen. The problem is that the weeds got sucked up into the thermostat and broke it in 2. So, Wendts discovered one side was running 120* and the bad side was running 75*. The result was a bad plug. So Scott put in 2 new ones that will run @130*. Maybe you should call Scott @ Wendts 920-688-2601.

Well, just an update on my repair. I took the boat out and what a difference!!! The water is screaming out of the pee hole now. It's smoother and response is quicker. It just has a lot of snap!!!!!!!!! Wendts did a great job.

I had a similar problem back in May, couldn't get over 4700 RPMS, just didn't want to run right. In my engine's case, the seals on the thermostats had been put in backward and then the thermostats got stuck open so the engine was always running cold. Marina mechanic turned them around and put in new plugs...all is well.

Richfish is right. Take it to the dealer and have an optimax update kit (fuel rails, etc.) put in it, and hope that fixes the problem. Other wise it will go boom.

I have 2001 Opti 225 every time it has fouled plugs in the last 3 years was caused by small wood chips or debris stuck in one or both thermostats. When the merc guys fixed up the thermostats the problem was solved. The different temperatures mess with the on board computer and send in the wrong fuel mixtures according to the merc guys at the fishing tournament.

Doug,

Interesting report, I also own a 2001 with a newer (2003) power head.. and the mechanic worked on it said he would put in the new updates (thermo. ect) and I have been fowling plug ever since..

I checked out the thermostats and they look fine, just wondering if it has something to do with the oil and gas mixture. Too much oil maybe
