Hey gang,

The recent events on Saginaw Bay got me to thinking.

What do you all think about tournaments scheduling an extra day at the end, in case? You know a three day event is scheduled for 4 days and that 4th day is used only if they need it. In the case of this year, maybe it would have been a 2 day event instead of a one day weight taking it all.

In another thread, Reels called it a "Blow Day"

Sure there are lot's of logistics to consider, and many other issues as well, but then that's why it might be a very interesting topic.

What do you think?

I have had blow days on Erie with the FLW the last few years, and it blows. Nothing sucks more that watching Oprah in a hotel room away from home. But, It is hard to reserve a hotel room on a maybe, especially on a holiday weekend. If they have 200 cancellations in town that morning, I am sure the chamber would get an earfull.

I like how the FLW addressed it, by having everyone fish day three with a day four format. Then just ten guys have to extend the stay.

i think it would be a good idea. however i think the pwt should let the regulars (pro's) take a vote and decide that option. but even the mwc and the flw should consider that. Ralph i'll be at the mwc weigh-in in marinette in a few weeks hope to see ya and chat.

Both Pro/Am circuits already have three or four days to fish. There IS no simple 'have a Bad Weater day' answer, because there could concievably be as many days high wind or lightning as there is contingency days, the hotel issues discussed before, the need to then schedule ANOTHER day off the job for most, and a number of other issues. The PWT has an Advisory Council, and I believe this topic has been discussed in detail. I think the format for both is fine, and all the anglers know the deal going in.

Can you imagine making the cut on th FLW holding down third, after finding a pod of fish no one else is fishing and coming from 80th to third, knowing that you have a GREAT chance for the win, only to have day four called due to weather? There is always going to be disappointed anglers when the weather shortens an event. I personally think you take what mother nature hands out and if you wish to be seen as a true professional, you accept the ruling from the tournament director (which is based on SAFETY first, and fair play second) as exactly what it is, and start preparing for the next event. Weather and big water, or lightning related calls are all part of the game. If one wants to play, one has to conform to the rules, and remember there is NOTHING more difficult for a director than to call an event.

Every time I hear about this issue I always laugh. What is the real purpose behind a "blow out day?" Tell me, what "Professional" Angler isn't trying to maximize the number of large fish caught during every second of every minute of every hour of every fishing tournament? When past experience tells you that, 1.) Tournaments on the Great Lakes Chain frequently experience bad weather, 2.) The PWT does not have a built in "Cancellation" day, and 3.) The PWT frequently cancels days due to weather, you take the risk of only fishing one or two days. If you are a "Pro" and you choose to fish in a manner that you are not giving a full effort in hopes of doing better tomorrow, and you finish out of the money and the rest of the tournament gets cancelled, too bad. If you don't like those odds, then don't sign up. If enough people don't sign up and numbers are down, the PWT will either ask questions and make changes or they will dry up and go away. With all tournaments, there are certain risks involved, including cancellations due to weather. The pro's should take some personal accountability and do a quick reflection on past tournaments and make the most of their situations. Also, Anglers can move down just as easy as they can move up. Many times anglers forget this fact. Also, if you have 10 anglers fishing on day 4, you still have 200 anglers getting hotel rooms for 4 days and you still have 190 people cancelling the 4th day. I don't know that 10 people will change the mood of the hotels in the area. All tournamets have their pro's and con's but none are perfect. I personally like the fact that the PWT doesn't have make-up days. It adds to the thrill of the weigh in's.

Just my $.02,
