A couple of days ago I tried to download and install a "firmware" update to my Garmin GPS Map 176. I obtained the updated software from the Garmin website, being careful to obtain the download for the right product and also print out and follow the instructions. Despite my caution, the software provided by Garmin's website failed to load properly. Tech support's e-mail suggestion did not resolve the issue. Now Garmin wants a $150 fee (pluss shipping) to "fix" my unit. The irony is that the update that I tried to download is software to "fix" a list of issues with their previous software. The unit is out of warranty, but was working properly before this downlaod failure, which has left the unit "dead". Am I out of line in thinking that $150 is a little high to fix a software issue that should be resolved in a matter of minutes? Also, I am curious if others have had download failures with this unit or firmware?

no, i've never had a problem downloading and installing updates on either of my units. yes i think that a buck and a half is way to high for a problem they will fix in 15 minutes. i'd get right on the phone and talk to someome there and if you don't get the answer you want call back till you do. move up the chain as you go till you find someone who understands your problem. most likely you will still have to send it back.

Any Garmin Pro staffers here..? I like to get a tech support contact that might be able to talk me through something... More than the telephone level "take it or leave it"...

Can you revert the unit to the previous, working firmware level? Many electronic components today allow for that. Then, you can better insure to correct the bad download.

Nope... can't go back... And, can't go forward... The unit will not power up and there is no master rest button or anything like that...
