ok, i am new to this site, and thought i would pass some info along. I am a guide on the lake, USCG certified, and my website is www.winnebagofishing.com

I am not trying to take anything from this awesome site, i hope to add, and not take away so here is what I know form last week, I hope it helps:

It does not seem to matter much for color right now, while jigging the reefs. What is important is finding an active school of fish, and then knowing the proper technique to catch them. This is what you can and will learn from me on a trip. Now I am not going to tell you that we will limit out in 2 hours, but I will show you proven tips and tactics that work for us.

Tonight at the boat landing I saw 2 boats, and asked them how they did, they told me they did not catch anything but sheeps. I asked them what they were using, and they both said leeches and crawlers for walleyes and or perch. I told both of them that right now the water temp is too warm for leeches, and that crawlers are the way to go. They also said they were using slip bobbers, and we all know how I feel about using them. Get rid of them. You are missing way too many fish by using slip bobbers. 90% of these fish we are catching right now, are dead tight to the bottom. So close in fact, we show nothing on our graphs, but we are still catching fish. You need that bait right on top of them, or you are not going to catch them, and that is fact.

You can read how we catch walleyes on my walleyes tips page. It is all right there for you to read, so take my word for it, and read it, then do as I am telling you, and you will see your numbers go up as well in the livewell. Ok, enough on that, I will move on!!!!!

North shore is dead for fishing, except in the morning on the northern part of the Outer Bar. They are catching perch there, and some are doing well. Crawlers and bugs is what I heard. I have not gone there, too many boats for me, but I do see you out there. There is a small hump that most are keying on, and then fishing around it.

West shore reefs are producing fish, but as I always tell you, you have to move to find an active school. We are using 1/16 oz jigs tipped with half crawlers. Sounds like a broken record I bet reading my log book, but that is all we ever use. I even went to 1/32 the other day, to try and trigger a few more perchies to bite better. Remember, smaller is better. (In some things anyways.) We are dragging our crawlers as slow as we can across the bottom, and are getting hits on almost every cast. Try it, it just might work!

East shore has had mixed reports. Some are saying they are doing well for perch, and others are saying they are not catching anything. i talked to a few of my buddies from that side of the lake this past few days, and it seems that they are doing well while trolling near the rock humps in Stockbridge. My other buddy said, perch are doing well in the early morning near the clay banks.

South shore.... I have heard nothing at all from anyone, so therefore I will not give you a line of smack. I do not know what is going on there, so there is your report.

Several of you have asked me about the customer appreciation day that we have coming up, so i am going to try and tell you a little about it now. On august 20th, 2005 we will be out at Val's Bait and tackle in Stockbridge. now Val's is located on carney Road, which is very close to Calumet County Park. It is right off of HWY 55, so you cannot miss it, just follow the smell of the Johnsonville Brats. We have a few things lined up for this day. there will be brats and food and soda available to purchase through out the day, and there will be a few reps from various tackle companies on hand to answer some questions. There will also be door prizes too. I am trying to see if we can get a well known guy to come and say a few words, but that seems kinda tough to do. I guess once you are a somebody, you got no time for the little guys. I will be there to finally meet you all, which I am looking forward too. I only know most of you as a.com name, so this will be nice to put a .com to a face instead. If there is enough interest, I can show some of you how we tie crawler harnesses, and where to purchase your beads real cheap. Let me know what else you would like to see there, and we will do our best to try and get it together for you all. All money that we raise, after expenses, is going to be donated to a good cause. We have not yet decided what to do with it yet, but we are open to suggestions. Some we have come up with so far: Walleyes for Tommorow, Take an unfortunate family fishing, Donate it to Sauger Reef building. Any suggestions? Let me know.

Ok, now your questions and comments to me.....(My Favorite part)

Axl, I tried to call you, but it says you are disconnected, what's the deal?

I now have a new cell phone number, as my old contract expired and I switched to a diff company. My new number is 920.702.7779, please jot this down.

Saw you were fishing in the Fleet Farm open, hope you do well.

Thank you, I hope so too. I hope you come to the weigh in, and hopefully we have some nice fish.

Why don't you ever tell us exactly where you fish, you always seem to beat around the bush with this?

I do not know exactly what to tell you I guess. Today(7/27/05) We fished from Davis point to Paynes Point, and we bounced around the reefs. We picked up fish all the while. There never is just one exact spot. All the spots I fish are given to you on the members only GPS page, what more can I tell you then that. I gave you all my GPS spots, and also tell you exactly how I am fishing, what else can I do, except wait for you to book a trip. Maybe if you did that, you would see exactly how we do things, but there is no BS here. I tell you how it is, and what we are doing, period!

What speed do you recommend for trolling crank baits?

I like to use 2.2 as a standard, but sometimes we go from 1.5 to 2.5, it depends on what the fish want.

I fished with you a few weeks ago, and will tell everyone of your guide service. You had us on fish all morning, and the day was simply awesome. Thanks for a great trip, and God bless you my friend.

Thanks for the compliment, and I am glad you had a good time on the water. Safety and your comfort are always my first concern, and then putting a few walleyes in the box, is always a bonus.

Well that is all I have for this week. I will be out ther on Thursday, for a bit, and then all weekend I hope. look me up on 68 if you care to chat some. Also please take a moment and let me know you got this. it seems that sometimes I send it out, and it does not go through right away for some reason or another.

Be safe, have fun, wear sunscreen, drink lots of water, and send me more info as always.

Axl

Greetings Gang:

First of all I want to apologize for the late newsletter this week. I went to the Packer game last night, and did not get a chance to write one up. I also want to thank you for your continued support for my website. We continue to grow , and it is because of all of you.

Last week we fished in the Fleet Farm Open, and placed tied for 24th out of 133 boats. The bite was slow, and 15 inch walleyes were tough to come by. We boated close to 25 walleyes, but only 3 were over 15 inches. We used jigs and crawlers on the west shore reefs and caught fish on both days on every reef we fished. I wish it would have been a perch tournament, as we boated about 25 of these as well. I consider it a success anytime you can finish in the top 25 in a major tourney, so all in all it was a good weekend to be fishing.

The walleye bite is very tough right now, and from the lack of reports and E-mails, i am assumming you all know this. Many of you have now switched to fishing for perch, but it seems we are struggling to find those as well.

Ok, well I will be out there this weekend, so hopefully I will see or meet some of you as well. I will be on the west shore from Neenah to Oshkosh, so feel free to gimme a holler if you are around. I listen or monitor 68 on the radio, so look me up there.

If you are interested in a guided trip, book now for the upcoming fall. The action for walleyes wil just get better as the fall starts to move in. I think August is a tough month to fish, and this is proven from my log books from years past. It will start to kick in real well in September, and then it will be time to get those trolling rods out, and start trolling the deep waters on Bago.

Remember to mark on your calenders, August 20th, 2005. I will be out at Val's Bait and Tackle for our customer appreciation day, and i am really looking forward to meeting all of you out there. I think it will be a fun day, and maybe we all can learn a little something from one another. We will be there from Noon until 5pm, and the brats and food will be ready to go.

Usually on this newsletter I try and tell you what I know from the shorelines around the lake, but this is honestly the first week, that I got absolutely no reports from any of you, so therefore I will tell you what I know.

The west shore reefs are giving up fish, but mostly thety are from 8-14 inches. (walleye) The perch are also showing up on the reefs, and those all seem very nice in size. We boated several clost to 12 inches last week. We were using slip bobbers for these, but setting the bobber so it was just touching the bottom, and letting it drift over the rocks on the reefs. We lost a lot of jigs, but the action was great. We did not do well for fish on leeches. We used all bits and pieces of crawlers.

East shore is doing well for perch on the small rock humps near quinney. most are using helgramites or wigglers.

North shore is doing ok for perch in the sand to gravel transition areas near Jefferson Park, and out in front of Waverly beach about 1.5 miles.

Bluegills, Sunfish, perch, and smallies are stacked up pretty good in Asylum bay right now. Size is not great, but the numbers are there.

Remember to slow down your presentation right now, and drag those crawlers as slow as you can. With all the food in the system right now, you need to entice them to bite, and have them bite on impulse instead of hunger. Remember to slow down your retrieve, it may take you up to 5 minutes to get a cast back in the boat, but it is well worth it.

A lot of you have been sending me an E-mail asking me for ideas on how to catch some fish right now this time of year, and the above paragraph is the best advice I can give you. i will also tell you that you need to move around a lot and find an active school of fish. This past week we had to move to 5 or 6 different reefs before we got on fish. The fish are there, you just need to work for them right now.

Ok now your questions and comments to me.......MY FAVORITE PART OF THIS NEWS LETTER!!!!

Axl, how do you find all your spots?

We go out and look for them. Sometimes we do not even bring a rod, we go on a seek and destroy mission as we call it, and will spend several hours to locate the exact spot I am looking for.

Nice job in the Fleet Farm Tourney, I saw you on stage in Oshkosh!

Thanks, I wish you would have come up to me and said hi, I am always anxious to meet new people.

What is your favorite fish to eat overall?

I truly love to eat bluegills 1st, then Walleyes, then Northern, then Perch.

Have you heard anything on Saugers?

Well, actually I heard last weekend, that there is talk of being able to keep up to five fish, either walleyes or saugers, and (1) one may be a sauger. Not sure when this will go into law or if it will, but there is talk of it.

Who designed your logo on your bumper stickers?

His name is Jack B. and he worked very hard on it, and I was honored to use it both on my stickers and my T-shirts.

Where is Vals bait and Tackle Shop?

It is located off of HWY 55 on Carney road near Stockbridge. I hope to see you there next weekend.

Any truth to the rumor that you are going to turn pro, and join the PWT?

Wow! I wish, but no chance of that all for a long time. I have responsibilities around here I need to take care of, and those guys are good. I would like to maybe join the RCL someday, but that has to wait for a few years as well. I wish I know where that came from, that is too funny. Thanks for the question though!

Well that is all I have for right now, if anything great happens to ya, let me know! i will keep you all posted as well. See you next weekend at Val's, and i look forward to seeing you on the pond in the next week as well.

Sorry for the late report, but I have been out of town the last few days, so just now getting things caught up.Date: 08/14/05
Time: 8 am until 4 pm

Place: little humps on west shore

Conditions: 80 degrees little wind, sunny

Vessel: Nothin' But Net

Crew: Axl, Doug, Bill

Catch: 15 Walleyes, 2 Perch, several smallies, several sheeps, 3 whitebass

Information: We fished several small humps along the west shore today, and we finally found a few fish on the 4th reef. We went on a nice little run and boated several nice siz fish in the 13-16 inch range. My clients went home with a nice bag of filets, and I was happy to see the fish start to show back up on the reefs once again. We used small jigs and crawlers, and also had a few bites on the dead sticks today. It was a great day on the water

Hi Gang:

Well first of all I just wanted to say thanks for all your continued support of my site. Without you, this site would not be possible, and I truly thank you for it.

I have not gotten a lot of reports the last few weeks, and it really makes my job tough to give you a good solid report. I was out last Sunday, but other then that, I have not been out, as I am trying to prepare for the upcoming Customer Appreciation Day this Saturday at Val's Bait and Tackle in Stockbridge. I hope to see you all there from 1-5 pm. I will tell you what I know, and what I heard, but this week will be rather short overall.

The perch bite is going on strong, and you need to find an active school of fish, and then it is really a no brainer. The perch have the feed bag on, and it is now time to start to chase these critters. We are not looking for perch, but we still do catch a few on a daily basis. They are all very nice in size, and a few of them are just plain slobs, well over 12 inches. Look for perch on the top of the reefs, and this is the time of the year where you need to throw out some slip bobbers. Make sure they are 1-2 inches off the bottom, and be prepared for a good day of fishing for perch. Use crawlers or bugs for the best chance at these tasty critters.

Some spots that are hot right now for perch are: 1.5 miles south of Waverly Beach, High Cliff Clay Banks, Pipe, Calumet County Park, Stevens Reef, Several Reefs on the west shore a well.

Walleyes are present too. They are a lot less aggressive, but they are there. We really needed to slow down our presentation this past week, and almost crawl our jigs over the reef to get them to hit. They are hitting and just holding the bait in their mouths, so if you feel pressure on your rod, you really need to set the hook. we missed so many fish last week, and yes we still boated over 15 walleyes in one day. What was nice, was that we also boated a few nice perch, so everyone was very happy at the end of the day. The walleyes were from 13-17 inches, and the perch were from 10-13 inches.

We are still sticking to our basic way of catching fish. We are dragging half crawlers on the bottom of the lake, and we are using small jigs in the 1/16-1/32 oz size. When we are dragging them, we are retrieving them at a snails pace, and feeling every nook and cranny along the bottom. The fish are there, but are very slow to bite, so you really need to get that bait in front of their faces, and then just hold on!!!

Ok, that is all I really know, if I knew more I would tell you, but as always, I will not BS you, and will not make up stuff, to just sound good. I believe in telling you the truth, and that is all you will ever get from me. So if that is a bad thing, I apologize, but for those of you that believe in being honest, that is all I know!

I will tell you this. This is my last newsletter before the big day this weekend at Val's Bait and Tackle in Stockbridge. We will be out there from 1-5 pm, and there will be door prizes, food, soda, vendors, and lots of fishermen out there exchanging info. If you have not planned on coming, I strongly suggest you do. It will be cool to meet all of you, and also exchange some good info among us BAGO guys. I am looking forward to seeing you there, so I hope you consider coming out and saying hi. All money raised will be donated to a great cause.

I have trips available in September and October if you are interested, just gimme a call at 1.920.969.9285, or my cell at 1.920.702.7779. I will do my best to put you on fish, and I can tell you that the first two weeks in September are generally great weeks to fish the reefs, and to pull out the trolling gear once again. My rates are great, but will go up soon, due to gas prices, which sucks, but you will get an education on how we fish, where we fish, and why we fish certain spots, and hopefully you can apply these things to your boat, and have a lifetime of memories. My goal is not to go out there and slam fish daily, but rather to learn something everyday, and then apply it to what I know, and then let you all know what we are doing, so we can all catch fish.

I get all kinds of E-mails, some are positive and some are negative, I wanted to touch base on this subject and let you know that I truly appreciate all your responses. We in life sometimes have a tendency to remember the bad things, and forget the good. If someone tells you that you are doing a bad job, and 100 people tell you that you are doing a good job, we remember the one bad thing. I want you all to know, that I expected both the good and bad, and truly appreciate it. I knew going in to this, that some of you would not be happy, and for this, I am sorry, but I also wanted to say thanks to all of you that give me positive feedback as well. A long time ago, I started this fishing thing, and thought to myself, what would happen if people started to know who I am? Well I guess I know now what you all think, and I thank you for this. For the most part, you all think I am an OK guy, but some of you still think I am not telling the truth or I am BSing you. Well like I said earlier, there will never be BS here. I tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I know some of you want betterr reports, better fishing conditions, better everything, but all I can do is report what I know, and how we do things, so either except it, or not, the choice is up to you. I am not doing this for the purpose of trying to be a legend, nor am I doing this for noteriety, I am doing this as a service for all of you, and I hope you can understand that. I do not have to do this, nor do I have to impress anyone. I am who I am, and pretty proud of who I am, and proud to be able to take people out on this great lake of ours, and see their faces light up, as they catch their first walleye. That makes me more happy then anything else.If you doubt my talent or my services, then book a trip, and I will try and do what i can to change your mind. That is the best info I can tell you.

Ok, Now I am done venting, so now your questions and comments to me????? I love this part!

Axl, The site has not been updated in like a week, what is going on?

The site was updated on 8/17/05, so I do not understand this one.

Can I have your autograph at the Val's thing?

Wow, never been asked for that before, sure, but it will be the first one I ever have given.

What is your favorite position?

This was honestly sent to me, so let me answer this as politically correct as I can. I like to find the top, and then back away from it, and then cast towards it, and just slowly drag my lure along the bottom, hoping for a bite! (WOW)

Axl, you are the Brett Favre of Bago, I hope you never retire!

OMG! Brett Favre is a legend, and I am in no way close to him at all. Thanks for the compliment, but I like to think of myself as just a guy who fishes a little bit, and catches a few fish once in awhile.

Your site is terrible. You think you are great but in all reality, you are just another fly by night fisherman!

Then why do you visit it. I have never forced you to come here, or asked you to come here, but yet you still chose to come to my site. If you do not like it, then leave. I bet you come here looking for info, but you are one of the people that never leave any. If that is the case then go else where. The goal of this site, is to help all catch fish, and all of us bond together to help one another. If you are not interested in this, just go away!

Axl, have you ever smoked a walleye?

No, I have smoked many kinds of fish, but never a walleye. I will have to try it soon, and see what it is like. I bet it is good, but I am willing to bet it is kind of dry at the same time.

I see you at the boat landing all the time at Jefferson Park, and I am always jealous of how you do on the lake. You always have a limit or a lot of fish. I want to know how you catch so many fish, and can you teach me?

The best advice I can give you is to book a guide and learn the lake. I am not saying book me, but book a guide who can teach you how to fish this lake, and show you techniques to put more fish in your kill box. Read my walleye and perch tips page. That is what we do, and that is the truth. Now I am not saying that my way is the only way, but it works for us.

This is all I have for this week. I hope to see you all on 08/20/05 at Val's Bait and Tackle, and look forward to seeing you on the pond as well. Be safe, have fun, and save a fish or two for me, ok?

I am out!
