When does the fishing on Little Bay heat up? I know theres a fall bite over there for big girls. Is it later in the fall, or should it be starting now that the cool weather has arrived?

We have a trip planned up there for Nov. 11-13. It will be my first time, but my friends do fairly well up there when they normally go the second weekend of deer hunting. I coaxed them into moving the date up so I could tag along. They subscribe to the "full moon is best" theory.

The fish are moving in to some degree now but it keeps getting better as temps go down. I will be up there from 10/23-29. We'll get lots of big fish but we may have to run south. My favorite week is usually the next one. Once you get into November the weather can get nasty but the fishing is great when you get out. We try to take a break during deer hunting and run over for a day. We've been doing this for 17 consecutive years and have learned to roll with the flow. Boat traffic can be heavy in late October but is no problem in late November.

Larry,

We are hoping to go this Saturday Oct 15th, can you give me an idea of how far south you are talking about? No specifics just general areas like Ford River, Cedar River, or farther south?

Seems everything I read from that area and bite at that time of year is "Stickbaits: Rouges, Husky jerks, Thundersticks. Slow moving baits with the rattles seem to be the ticket. They have a site for that area where you can ask local guides, just can't remember what it is. Someone out there knows the one I'm talking about.

I'm making my first trip up this weekend. I'll be up there every weekend except deer hunting until ice-up, which is usually mid to late December. The fishing is usually fairly good by now and will continue to get better until ice-up. Check the local websites for info, they're pretty good about sharing. The night bite is good shallow over and along weedbeds with stickbaits on straight mono. Daytime is best trolling stickbaits across mudflats or near structure with leadcore line.

Don't overlook the open water at night, most people do. Also, don't be afraid to try some baits with faster action such as DJ's or Deep Little Rippers. Try to stay away from the crowds if you can and DO NOT run back across your fish to set up your next trolling pass. Since the water has been clearing this will spook them and shut off a good bite quickly.

Most people new to the Bay de Noc area struggle with the bite, especially the day bite. I was no different, it took me a few years to figure things out and learn how to catch fish there consistantly. Keep working at it and don't be afraid to ask questions of your fellow fishermen when they tell you how they did back at your hotel. If you run into me I usually share info pretty freely, and I find most others do as well.

There will probably be fish at black bottom but they may be smaller. During the day I would suspect Cedar River to be good but you might want to check with cedar river charters, the cedar river bait shop, and the baydenoc.com web site. Seagull and Noseeum would be two other good spots to check. I would also say that 15-18 foot water near the mouth of the ford might be worth a run. Then there is always Minneapolis and associated reefs. At night there will be good fish associated with the weeds up at the north end but the Stonington area can be a great no crowd area as fall progresses. Make sure you plot your night runs during the day as the area always manages to have a few navigational surprises, especially when you are trying to work the 8-15 foot breaks. I've never fished at night much south of Eskybut there are great weed flats down by the Ford River. Too much water and too little time-way too much fun. And then theres Big Bay.

Thanks Larry - I'll let you know how it goes, but it looks like we will be stuck on the west shore. The wind forecast keep picking up.

Wind does look nasty. We have caught fish during bad winds out in front of the coal piles in front of Kipling, along the weedline and just north of the green can. The area in front of Gladstone beach always has smaller walleyes if you can get out there. Lastly you can launch at the Esky river and fish that west break especially in front of the Terrace Motel. If it really blows the DNR office put us on to some good inland lake fishing one day a few years ago. Good luck.

Well we made it up there on Saturday and it didn't take long for the wind to pick limiting our locations. We spent the whole day at the north end of the bay. Two boats - 7 eyes from 16 to 26 inches, a few perch and a few pike. We were hoping for those bonus steelhead we caught last year, but the water was a little colder last year.

Was it still a crawler harness bite or a crank bite up north? We head up there Saturday for the week for what I suspect will be a transitional bite. I hope the winds subside for a while.

Yes it was a crawler bite, brass blades with green finger nail polish, gold blades with copper beads, and Walleye Choice harnesses in I-42. All are basically a perch pattern, I tried firetiger but that was the Pike's choice.

Larry, Purple Skeeter and Others,

It sounds like many of us are going to be up there at about the same time. Anyone want to meet, have dinner or a barley pop and discuss fishin'?

Someday and I will be there late Wednesday the 26th until the 30th.

Anyone interested?

Dennis, I'll probably be up about the same time. I don't think we've ever met but I told you I'd buy you a beer about a year and a half ago, so I guess it would be a good time to pay up. Where you staying? I'll probably be at the Terrace.

I ran up for the day on Sunday and it wasn't pretty. It's the first zero I've had in 4 or 5 years. We caught a few pike and a perch, but no eyes. Hopefully we get some cold weather soon, the water's still 57-58.

Dennis:

Give me a call on the cell when you get there. Hopefully we'll be tired of eating fish by then. Purple Skeeter, I'll be with that other notorious Skeeter owner John D. at the Bayshore. Pick a radio channel and we can stay in touch on the water. we usually monitor 9 and 16 but will gladly change. Weather looks tough early in the week.

Big walleye around Cedar River. We caught two walleye that were released to fight again, 29 1/2" 9# 3oz. and 30" 12# 9oz. More walleye caught but these were the biggest. 30" had a jaw tag that was left on the fish when it was released.
