This is going to be my first year trolling on winnabago and poygen. I was just wondering what every body thinks is the best bait and color. Thanks for any info.[:)]

Keep it simple if your just starting out. Shad raps and Walleydivers will get the job done.Try a few of the basic colors and see what they want.[;)]

If i was given 1 bait to use on Winnebago it would be a Shad Rap #5 Perch color. My second biat of choice would be a Thunderstick dj.

Trolling is just a matter of finding out what particular lure is working on a particular day. After you determine that "lure of the day" you just need to replicate the presentation. Some days shinney is better than dull finishes. Sunny, cloudy and water clearity are all facters the efect how a Marbel Eye sees a lure. You might try to match the lure to the color of the sky. Lure action is a factor. A HotnTot will entice them on days that you just can't get the Shad rap to work. Speed is important. Try not to run differnt action lures at the same time. Some lures are made for slower speeds than others. I would agree that a #5 Perch Rap is a good go to bait. Don't over look the Matalic Perch Wally diver. Some days I just dump the box out on the floor of the boat and keep changing until I find the one the they want. One general rule of thumb and I mean "generaly" Don't troll dirty water.
Good Luck!

Really depends on what time of year and where you plan on fishing. I usually work the shorelines in spring and use #5 and #7 floating rapala's. Gold/black, silver/black and blue/white have been productive.
I like the countdown rap's while trolling the tops and sides of reefs in 6-8' of water. Perch seems to works well along with orange/gold.
Out in the mud anything goes. Just make sure you cover all the depths until you find active fish. They'll be days when you can try everything you own and still come home empty.

Good luck when you can get out.[;)]

I trolled for the first time with boards last year and, along with everyone else, caught limits for two both times in about two hours. I would agree that it was different both days. The first, silver and black wally diver were it, the next, a chrome and blue hot n' tot was it. I did not catch much on shad raps nor dj thundersticks so must be doing something wrong as everyone else seems to do well with these. I was told by a long time Bago' fisherman to always have the smaller wally diver out in black and silver. As for other advice I have or was given, get the trolling guide for crankbait depth and get tattle flags ( I made mine). That is my two cents from a fellow beginner.

A question to others here- why countdown raps on the reefs? For weight do to deeper water than a shallow will run or can you use shallow with a split shot? Thanks

Good question bradley, I have been thinking about the advantage of using countdowns on the reefs and have not thought of any. Maybe Marken will share his reasons why countdowns on reefs.
My favorite baits for trolling the mud are Walley divers and the old style Thundersticks. Just got some of the new Renosky's that Gary Grey has been promoting, and like the action they have at 1.5mph. Have not tried them any faster yet - too cold.

this works 4 me trolling shallow water, I sometimes like 2 bang bottom with a bait.I make up my own 7strand steel leaders, I rig this up with a crank bait.the zebra mussels dont cut this.I was loosing 2 many baits as the line was getting all nicked up.starting this sat I will be getting out often, will post, iam not going 2 wait anylonger 4 it 2 warm up.[;)]

I would have to say on poygan the best bait would be #5 shad raps in silver, gold, and firetiger. On winnebago #7 and #8 shad raps work well over the mud in the same colors.

Just re-read this thread and I noticed I was asked a question about countdowns on the reefs.
I would just say personnal preference. I seldom use boards and prefer to longline most of the time. With 120 feet of line out I'll just be runnong at 6' down which will occasionally tick the rocks. I also like their action for this presentation.
Yes, the shallow runners will work with splitshot, but why if you don't have to?
Like I said, personnal preference.[:praise:]

I don't know that they make an actual countdown shad rap, but I use the deep diving #5's for the reefs. I do lose some baits this way but I cut off about 10' of line every so often. My feeling is a leader would take away from the action of the bait; it may not but that's just my opinion.

I have to agree with everybody about different baits for different days. The thing is that alot of people don't want to spend their kids college education on crankbaits. You don't need every kind of crankbait to catch fish. Very rarely do you have to have one certain bait to catch fish. Not saying that it does not happen but it is rare. In my opinion there are two main categories of cranks, Bass and Walleye. Bass cranks are alot fatter in profile than walleye cranks. Long stickbaits and skinny shad style baits are more walleye specific based on forage. Now I am definately not saying that I have not caught walleyes on a Rapala Fat Rap, but I have caught alot more on a Shad Rap. If someone stole all my crankbaits and I only had a couple hundred dollars to buy more with these are the ones I would buy:
#5 shad raps
1/4 oz wally divers
Cotton Cordell Wally Minnow Jrs.
Reef Runner lil' Rippers
This will cover all depth ranges. Hope this helps,
Rich

I think you are confusing them with Risto Raps. I have never caught a walleye on them. The new suspending shad raps have the same bill. Never caught a walleye on those either. If you are hitting bottom with them, the bill formation is not as important. If you are running them for suspended fish then the bill means everything.

I would have to say my Go to bait would have to be a Perch colored Salmo, 2nd would be a Hot Pink Salmo, for casting and trolling.
