| From the Minnesota DNR.......
"We have received notification today from the Dakota County Sheriff's Office that they have closed all lakes in the county to car and truck traffic. Questions: Dakota County Sheriff's Office at (651) 438-4770
In addition, the Goodhue Co. Sheriff has closed (to cars and trucks) their portion of Byllesby Reservoir, in conjunction with Dakota County, and also Frontenac Pond (in Florence Township). Questions: Goodhue County Sheriff's Office (651) 267-2617
As of today Anoka, Dakota and Rice Counties have banned cars and trucks on their lakes. Goodhue has banned them on Byllesby Lake and Frontenac Pond"

That makes it pretty much the southern third of the state that has banned car or truck use on the lakes now. With the conditions deteriating as fast as they are, its a good bet that the big fishouses will have to be off Mille Lacs before the season ends at the end of Feb.. As of last week we only had 16" of ice on the lake. |

| I just heard from a friend that Lake Pepin on the Mississippi has open water all the way down past Maiden Rock in case anyone here wants to hit some open water. |

Location: Neenah, WI | I'm all for safety on the water (hard or soft) but don't you think government is leaving themselves open for problems here? What happens in the future when they don't ban cars and trucks when ice is supposedly safe? If a guy breaks through can he go after the DNR? I'm not a troublemaker but I'm curious as to others opinions. |

Location: upper michigan | I guess one thing would be to close of all public access to the water as far as putting snow fences up to block vehicles from driveing on. This would not say they cant drive on but would not allow them to use public property to access the water with a car or truck. |

| The DNR has never endorsed the use of cars or trucks on ice. It's the county sheriffs that decide if and when to close a body of water (ice) off from use. |

Location: Rhinelander | For sure. This has been a weird winter, WAY warmer than 'normal' but not that far off the mark from the last couple. What we HAVE had this season here is snowmobile trails that are open. Just about the time the snow is gone, we get another 3 to 8" and keep things going. The ice here is in fair shape, but many lakes are not safe to drive on anymore. |

Your right Jack.
Neither the DNR or the Coast Guard will ever be on record saying any ice is safe for travel. In fact its become almost the Coast Guards mission statement that no ice is considered safe, and they'll state that in any court of law. Reason I know is that a guide friend of mine was sued a few years back by ice fishing clients for a slip and fall accident on Lake Erie. After the Judge heard that exact statement from the regional CG officer at the trail, he threw out the case. I'm very surprised in fact that the Sheriff's office would go on record about ice safeness either way.

Location: Saginaw Bay | Talk about lack of ice, I had the Lund out this past weekend on Saginaw Bay.. open water for as far as you could see...Normally I would be out there with the snowmobile on 12" of ice, this time of year....Tom |
