Hi Gang:

I hope all is well with you and your family. I know the kids are getting restless, the weather is terrible, and we are all spit shining our boats and dreaming of walleyes and perch out on our great lake.I cannot remeber a winter like this in a long time, and I am sick of it.

I hope all you sturgeon-heads are praying for cold weather. The lake is open in several spots and the undercurrent is strong. This results in current under the ice, which will in turn eat the ice away from the bottom. You add the rain and 40 degree weather and it is not pretty at all.

We had a monthly meeting for our upcoming event called Kids Wish for Fish, out at Val's Bait and Tackle, in Stockbridge. We discussed what we were going to do, how we were going to do it, and when the event will be. I am in need of volunteers for this event. We are going to be taking 15 physically challenged kids out in our boats for a 3 hour trip. exact times are not yet known, but the date is June 4, 2006. We are going to be fishing for 3 hours, and then giving all of our new friends some door prizes, and feed them lunch. We also will be cleaning the fish for the families. I hope I remember how to clean a fish! All fish will then be given to the families. i really want you all to be there, but unfortunately I cannot accept all of you. I do need 15 boats there. The requirements to fish in this great event are as follows:

Your boat must have a steering console and a flat bottom.

You must have a marine radio and a cell phone

All safety features must be current and up to date.( PFDS,flares, extinguishers, ETC..)

You must have a partner to run the boat in case of an emergency.

You will be fishing with a physically challenged child, and their guardian. (AWESOME)

You will not be allowed to have alcohol or drugs on the boat. All boats will be inspected for this, so please do not damper the day by bringing any of this. We can have a beer or two after the event and the kids are gone.

This event is not endorsed by me, nor am I trying to promote myself. I am just trying to do something for some kids that might not have the same chance to fish, like us and our kids. We are very blessed to have all the gear and boats and motors, and I just want to give something back to the community and to my favorite lake. Bago has been good to me, and I owe her one!

All bait, tackle, rods, reelsgas and anything else you may use that day, will be donated by you. We will not be responsible for providing or supplying you with fishing gear or bait or anything. Remember, you are volunteering this time and money, and it will be great to have you there.

Ok, well if interested in fishing with us this day, let me know, and I will pencil you in.

Fishing has been slow on the sytem all over. The gizzard shad are thick, the ice is bad, the small whitebass are everywhere, and did i mention that the ice is bad?

If you are looking for a guided trip, book now. I am filling up in June and July, and it is all first come first serve. My rates are good, and I will do what I can to put you on fish. Had to throw it in the report, after all , it is my report, and my website. (HEHEHE)

I will be heading out to North Dakota to fish in late February. We have 12 guys headed out to Devils Lake, and we are pretty pumped up about going. The ice out there is not very good either. Seems like 4-6 inches is all they got too. We will be going after waleyes, northerns, and perch. If any of you got info on that pond, feel free to send it my way. I am not shy, hell , I need help for out there and not proud to ask for it either.

Remember to send me an E-mail if you are not getting into the members only section. I recently changed the log-ins, and your old password will not work. You need to send me an E-mail and tell me what you want your username and password to be. I will then load it into the system, and send you a confirmation on this. Several of you have renewals coming soon, and I hope you all come back for another year. If it was not for all of you, I would not be able to keep our little piece of the world wide web running. There is a lot of time and effort put into it, and I thank you all for your continued support.

Here is what I know about some other places around the area:

DePere is open, but space is limited, and the fish do not have the feed bag on quite yet. For God's sake it is only February, and people are getting upset that the fish are not there yet, WOW!

Asylum Bay on Bago, is still ok,I drove by there the other day, and saw several people in portable shacks. did not see any quality fish caught, but did see a few seagulls eating some small whitebass, and loving it.

The river is open in spots, but the problem is all the ice coming down. Be very careful if you are going to bounce jigs down the river, and remember you never know what is going to be coming down next. I would hate to see you get caught against an ice heave and no place to go. I do not recommend fishing in a boat quite yet. Be patient, it is only February!

Ok, now my favorite part of this report, your questions to me.

Axl, do you suggest a bow mount or a stern mount trolling motor?

I like the bow mount, because when I troll with crawler haresses, and cannot get slow enough, I turn on the bow mount and place it against the way i am travelling, thus slowing me down more. I also like to hug the contours of reefs and structure, and I feel I can turn quicker and better with a bow mount.

Is there any truth to the rumor that we will be able to keep saugers this season?

Great question! I have heard the same rumors. The last I heard is that there is a proposal to keep 5 fish daily, and one can be a sauger of a certain slot limit. This is not the law, nor am I telling you to keep saugers. It is currently against the law to keep a sauger. This is just what I have heard.

I heard through the grapevine, that you are not guiding in 2006, what is the deal with that?

Wow! Do not believe everything you hear. I am guiding and taking bookings now. I do have several other things on my plate right now, but trust me, I will be fishing in 2006, both tournaments and also guided trips.

Axl, you are a class act, I fished with you last year, and it was a great day on the water. I learned so much in one day, and will tell all my friends and family about you. I actually still carry that picture of my fish in my wallet, and show it to everyone. Your legacy continues to grow down here in Milwaukee, and throughout the state. Keep up the great work, and continue to do what you do for all of us. It is greatly appreciated by me!

Wow, thanks for the compliments. I am not real good at accepting those, but it is nice to hear. I feel that when you hire me, you are paying for a service and deserve to be treated like royalty. If all of us treat everyone like a customer, whether external or internal, in everything we do, this world would be a much better place to live in. Treat everyone fair and decent, and it will pay off for you in the end. Thank You for the nice comment Larry!

Hey Axl, you do well on the soft water, but I have not heard a peep out of you about the frozen water, what gives there?

Simple answer here. I have not gone out there because there is not a fish on this planet that is worth my life. I can get fish in the boat and very content doing so. Ice fishing is fun, but safety first. Please read my recent article on ice-fishing safety in the article section. If it is not safe, don't do it!

I recently purchased 12 crawler harnesses from you, and they are simply awesome. I will tell all i know about them, and be ordering more soon.

Thanks a lot, glad you like them. You can now purchase them from my website for $3.50 each or they are also at The Sportsman's in Appleton, and soon to be featured at Val's Bait and Tackle in Stockbridge as well.

Well all i got for now, I need to hit the hay, and get ready for a new day and new dreams. You all be good, and remember to make every moment matter. Take a kid fishing, and have a partner for life.

God Bless!

I have removed the part about Lake-Link due to the fact I was in error about what they are taking away. They are only removing the messenger service and not the reports. That is cool, i do like seeing reports from there as well. I am sorry for the confusion on this matter, my bad!

that may be true but what you get for 34 bucks a year is not worth it. the lake maps stink, the lures are closeout garbage, and the site is a haven for idiots. if you want to know " what are you listening to now" or " will brett favre retire" or " whats your favorite song" then the site is for you. if you want meaningful info and a well run site come here or to a few other good sites.

just my 2 cents.

Yep.

I think LL is ok. It would take a lot, knowing what I know now, to get me to pay for access. A few bucks aint bad. But you gotta have value.

Folks are folks. Some nuts, some not so nuts. And some in between. The tweeners scare me.
