Sunday, March 5th saw a mixed bag of tricks in the weather at Barto Landing in Spring Valley. It was calm and dry at 5:30 a.m. but by takeoff at 7:00 there was an inch of snow on the ground along with rain and sleet coming at intervals. This lasted most of the day before changing to rain. Needless to say it was an uncomfortable day, but fish were caught by the 56 teams with anglers from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin.
First place finish went to Doug Schlenz from Spring Valley and Jake LaPine, from Fon du Lac WI with a six fish limit weighing 13.63 pounds, earning them a check for $1960.00. Doug and Jake caught their fish with lead head jigs tipped with minnows. Second place honors went to Max Actis, Spring Valley and Mike Stuckert, Spring Valley with a six fish limit weighing 12.98 pounds earning them a check for $960.00. They also brought the big fish of the day to the scale weighing 4.04 pounds worth $560.00. Third place went to the brothers team of Jay Walsh, Chicago, and Bill Walsh, Ottawa. They brought in a 6 fish limit weighing 12.17 earning the $540.00. Rounding out the top 5 were Doug Hoster, Marsailles and Ryan Vecchia, Spring Valley,with 12.15 pounds, and the fifth place team of Steve and Jeremy Skupien, Chicago with 11.37 pounds.
