Location: Rhinelander | I wouldn't worry too much about how the Otter Street event is run, it's top shelf all the way. If you are not competing, I'd REALLY not worry. If you are, and have concerns, address them to the Tournament Directors. |

| Van Oss brothers lead fishing tourney
Tops after day one with 15.78 pounds
By Eric Quintanilla
of The Northwestern
As the Otter Street Fishing Club's 26th annual tournament opened Saturday morning, 327 teams embarked on a race to see who was the best angler on Lake Winnebago.
After one day of the tournament, the current leaders are brothers Dave and Eugene Van Oss with a combined weight of 15.78 pounds.
"We had a pretty good day today and hopefully we can do it tomorrow," pro fisherman Dave Van Oss said. "Being in the lead the first day is exciting and fun but it's also intimidating because a lot of the time the leaders don't win the tournament. It's a good feeling but also makes us very apprehensive. It's a two-day tournament and you have to catch fish tomorrow too."
With the field stocked full of local anglers who grew up fishing the lake, the first day was indicative of just how tight a race it will be. Everyone wants to take home the $13,000 first-place prize and is willing to use every fishing skill at their disposal to do it.
"I think today went smooth," director of the tournament Jim Gibson said. "I just was talking to some fishermen who came over to congratulate us. They said they've fished all the tournaments and this is the smoothest tournament that they've been in. In 26 years we've taken a lot of the mistakes out."
While the Van Oss brothers managed to bring in the largest overall haul of day one, it was Todd Rieder who brought in the largest fish when he brought back a 7.86-pound walleye. The catch helped him stay in contention for the overall tournament as he and his partner finished the day in 11th place with 12.56 pounds.
"Todd Rieder is gonna win a 15-horse four-stroke long shaft engine for that fish," Gibson said. "If it's the largest fish and it holds up tomorrow, we're gonna mount that fish for him free of charge."
While the tournament has brought anglers from all over in the past, this year's field is stocked with local fishermen. The top seven teams' walleye total is only separated by one pound. The second and final day of the tournament will see boats begin launching at 5:30 a.m. today and begin weighing them in at 2 p.m.
"You never know who is going to win," Gibson said. "We used to have some of the pros from the big tournaments here. These locals are good fishermen and this is their water. They know what they're doing and out-fish some of the pros. There are no favorites. She's rough out there. No favorites just hard fishermen and a little luck."
