Had a very strange charter this mormning with 12 young college people, for a short 8:00am to 12:00pm charter. Some were from out of state, a few from out of the country. Their main man (employer) called me on short notice Wednesday to book 2 boats for today and they were lucky enough to have both me and Sea Gypsy charters available. Out of the 12, 8 had never caught a fish before and 5 had never even been on a boat. So When I seen the flag flapping straight out at NNE at Hoyles Marina this morning when I arrived, I knew the day might be (lets say) interesting. With everybody aboard we started out. 1's turned to 2's, then 3's and then 4's by the time I arrived just West of the Spark Plug. The pounding we took on the way out seemed to make for more laughter then concern from the rookies. I knew trolling into the waves would be a nightmare, so I turned the boat around with the waves and started the 8 HT Yamaha kicker, flicked on my TR-1 auto pilot and thought I was set. But for some reason she wasn't holding a straight course for me. I thought it might simply be to rough. So I decided to go with my Off-shore In-Lines versus My Otter Boats, which meant a lot more work and explaining to people new to catching fish of any kind what the program was.

For crankbait choice, I decided to try some of the New Dave's Lure Rough Guys in the 1/4 ounce size I had stocked up on. So I put 3 Yellow perch flavors on, sent them back 90 feet and attached them to the only 3 boards I planned on using on that side of the boat. Then moved to the other side and sent out 3 Rattle Tot's with spoon sliders 70 Back. When I was done with the tot's and spoons, the 3 Rough Guys already had fish on them. And for those of you who think the Bigger walleyes are out in the outer Bay, think again. 1 of these fish was 27 inches, the second 25 and the last 22. But heres where it gets interesting. I'm about to club that first fish before throwing him in the cooler, and the guy who caught it stops me. Are you going to kill that fish? Ya I was, I answer. I'd prefer you let him go, because we are not going to keep any today, nor do we have any way to transport any back to our homes.

So back went 2 of the bigest walleyes I've caught in the last 3 charters. This went on like this for a while, no more really big fish, but with the Rough Guys staying hot. We had thrown back 11 keeper fish, when I noticed my deck fan (from the pounding) had fallen on top My Gyro Compuss to my TR-1 auto pilot. I removed the fan and the TR-1 came back from the dead and steered me straight again. I switched over to the Otter Boats and we boated 8 more fish before I pulled lines at 11:37. Oh ya, we kept a few of them that had swallowed the small Rough Guys and were going to die anyway. Picture or the Rough Guy Yellow perch, and one of the fish that got to greedy below.

It's as good this year as it was back in the late 80's/early 90's. Those naturals from the last 3 spawning seasons, combined with average water temps (finally) are turning things around (SO FAR).
