| With all the hoopla over Skeeters posts and thousands of views daily add to that the limited posters these days and maybe its time this site offered a Registered user only forum. It sure would cut down on the monitoring and get rid of the Riff Raff.
We are all unique individuals that have our opinions (boy am I unique) but it's time the nasayers step up to the plate and be identified or LEAVE! Zach, What would the ramifications be if you allowed everyone to see IP's and not only who's on line?
I know there are many lurkers out there and many of them are posters of the past that have been bitten by the internet bug who no longer post could you tell us why? Are you fishing more? Did you have a life altering experience? Or are you just plain ole tired of all the BS?
Just a thought?
Good Luck

Location: Rhinelander | The problem the fellow you mentioned had was not on the board, but via email, I was told. Registering doesn't do a thing to prove identity, it's easy to use an email address acquired just for a registration. It's also easy to use a service that is near impossible to track IPs unless theres a serious crime, and a few out there that are impossible no matter what.
There's no need to require registration. MuskieFIRST has tremendous message board traffic and we have VERY few problems because of tight moderation. In fact, the board is somewhat 'self policed' by quite a few of the regulars who will let you know if you are out of line in a hurry.

| Steve, Your missing the point!......We're not looking to personally identify the user for criminal reasons but rather what a particular user posts to understand their credability. This WILL get rid of the riff raff.
If it was an e-mail issue why delete his posts?
These are Walleyes not Muskies you should know it's a different breed!
Good Luck

Location: Essexville, MI./Saginaw Bay. | The Next Bite web site has a policy of using your real name either in your posts trailer or in your board name. That policy seems to be working very well for them. Not one single problem, jab or nasty remark towards anyone (by people adhering to this policy) that I ever noticed in the year I've been on that site as a registered member. Non members can still view the threads, learn, and gain information but are reminded immediately when and if they post to use their real names.
There would still be lurkers though I'm afraid, even if registration was required. Some people will never post for fear of being criticized or sounding stupid for asking silly questions. Not that they are, but that some people just perceive themselves and/or their questions as such. And knowing their real names would only chase these particular people further back into the corner. So there's no easy remedy for either way of doing things. But timely moderation and group scoldings to the trouble makers lets the fire starters know they need to visit some other board quickly. Sad part is, few people stick up for even fewer people on these boards for fear of getting lashed themselves.

Location: Rhinelander | No, Tyee, with due respect you missed the point. As I said, registering doesn't necessarily identify or define anyone. 'Credibility' doesn't come from you or anyone else knowing who a poster is by name, it comes from reasonable and information based conversation; offering information and knowledge one has when a question is asked or advice when one might be willing to. It is accepted that fishing knowledge can come from those who are defined by profession or reputation as experts or those who simply know the answers from experience, and in fact that the experts had to learn from someone. We welcome them all.
We strive to offer a clean and friendly place for the exchange of information, and the offending arguments that motivated this thread were not held onsite. Nor will any ever be.
I don't accept that 'riff raff' exists by the tone of definition you are using; there are those who post, and those who do not, those who share information and offer advice and those who are happy they do. There are those who are nice folks, and maybe some not so nice; forced registration won't do a thing to identify that. It's no different in any community, virtual or otherwise.
We didn't delete a thing, he did.
Dan, point well taken, and you actually described why we don't require registration to post. Thank you, sir.

| I agree with Steve. With my little site, I require registration but that does not stop the ocassion idiot from doing bad stuff. I had one guy spamming my board and the ISP made me jump through hoops to just report it. I can ban IP's, but they just spoof and they come back. | |

| Steve, Sorry I didn't mean to insinuate that WF deleted the posts but rather why would he delete them if it was an e-mail issue rather than what he says in the Forums. I'm sure the e-mail was related to the posts don't you think?
And lets clear up the identity issue right now. Maybe your not looking at it the same way I am. I like to read credable information and what a person posts determines his credability to me! If I know his login/IP is the same everytime, the validity of his "reasonable information based communication" is much more credable hence preventing many from using multiple identities. He would be less likely to post controversial/nonsensical statements (this is the riff raff context I was refering too).
I realize this might reduce your customer base but it might make for a higher level of open communication between users, therefore bringing a greater value to your sites customers.
Again just a thought!
Good Luck

I agree with Dan on the Next Bite, they never have problems and it's a clean site with nobody taking shots at other people.
With that being said, they still have to monitor the site, if someone comes on and doesn't use their name, they remind them to use their name. If it continues to happen, they don't let them post, they delete them.
You dont have to register to use their site, just use your real name. It will take more time for the moderators and more of your time.
It seems to me that this site is getting to be more like W.C., in that more people are taking shots at people with anonymous posts. Don't get me wrong, this site is a heck of a lot better than W.C., and I'm not trying to compare them. Just stating that I hate the anonymous posts.

Location: Rhinelander | If someone does take a personal 'shot' at someone else here, it's usually gone as soon as we see it, and that eventually gets through to the offending party and others who might be tempted.
The 'Next Bite' is a totally different type of web property with totally different goals, and as a result might do things differently than OutdoorsFIRST.
Moderation is the key, and that moderation needs be consistent and quick. We hope we are both, that's the goal at all times. Tyee, if someone is logging in with multiple identities using the same IP, they get a communication from us pretty quickly so no worries there. Far as emails go, we have absolutely no control over arguments between those who post and those who want that information kept some sort of secret about fishing spots or techniques, and it's a total mystery why he removed all his posts. I suppose he reacted to negative emails and made an association from those negative communications that in his mind was a reflection on all who visit here, which is unfortunate.
The receipt of critical email happens to almost everyone at one time or another who is open and willing to share information. It's happened to me, and not just once. I had a VERY high profile angler send me a nasty critical email allowing that I was offering too much information, and that those I was offering the info to were somehow undeserving and needed to 'earn' the info the hard way or something. To that, I said phooey. I still do. I'll share what I wish with whom I wish as should everyone who wishes to exchange information, and that is the philosophy of this board, at least from that particular perspective.
One can personally either take information shared here as credible or dismiss it as not, it's the information offered by folks that is either real or not, and that's not all that hard to pin down after a time. Good information and conversation eventually leads to mutual respect. That builds community, and offers a comfortable place to visit.
Arguing over that sort of thing is IMHO absolutely ridiculous. Like Crocodile Dundee said, it's sort of like fleas arguing over who owns the dog.

| I agree with Steve, here. Registration won't do anything to correct the issue at hand.
The Next Bite had asked me to post using my real name. Well, I've been known as Shep most of my life. Many, many more people have called me Shep, than Tim. So when I told them this, they said they wouldn't know Shep from Adam. I responded that may be, but they also wouldn't know Tim from Adam. So I quit posting. Silly rule. I don't miss it. They also have less traffic than this site does, certainly way, way, less than MuskiFirst. I have to believe the amount of traffic is affected by that rule. Certainly what happened with Purple Skeeter probably would have happened had he posted at the NextBite, too.

| Steve, hit the nail on the head ... on all points. The Next Bite and Outdoor First are two different animals with different goals, monitoring these sites is the key to keeping them successful, and not requiring registration keeps things open for folks to get the information they are looking for.
There's plenty of room on the web for everyone, and we enjoy good relations with both Walleye First (Outdoor First) and Walleye Central not to mention several other smaller sites around the internet. We welcome the open exchange of information with all.
Tim (Shep), I'm sorry you feel our policies are "silly", but that's the way we've chosen to do business. Our members seem to appreciate how we do things and we feel that by knowing who you're exchanging information with has helped to build a "community" of like-minded anglers. I'm sure the same can be said for this and other sites as well ... no site is going to be perfect for everyone.
Is one site better than another? I don't think so ... each is different and strives to do what they do best. Personally, my favorite aspect of this site is the tournament coverage ... these guys do it better than anyone - bar none!!

| Mark,
As I said, everyone who knows me, knows me as Shep. If you asked about Tim Sheppard, more then likely, people would say, "Who?" Now refer to me as Shep, and I'm sure you'll get an ear full!
Maybe silly is not the correct description, however, it is your ploicy, and it is one that I will not be able to follow, so I will refrain from posting on your site.
