| What does the walleye I caught today have in common with a pig?
They're both fat!
Very, very cold fishing on ice the last two days in LBDN and this is the way I like it best. Something about extreme weather that adds just enough tension to wake me up and force me to focus. Of course a nice warm shack to hide out in helps big time!
Oh yeah, and I do have some fish to clean tonight. Last night just before dark I jerked up 2 perch, and was determined to bring in a walleye as well, but the bite was tough and I finally gave it up at 9pm. Would have fished longer, but I got nervous when the wind kicked up so hard it created a white-out and I couldn't see the lights on shore. Those deep ruts cutting through the higher snow drifts were filling up, and with 6 below zero and 25 mph winds, it is not a good time to get stuck!
But I had another day and my lines were back in the water at the crack of dawn.
Again the bite was slow, but I had company for a few hours this morning by the fella who owned the shack, and we had a great time discussing world politics (just kidding!). All day brought me 6 smallish, barely keeper perch. Caught quite a few smaller than that, and it kept me busy thinking if those small fish were hanging around, there had to be some walleyes check'in 'em out.
Sure enough, before dark the first walleye struck! I was resting my jig pole on a bucket and porky pig herself made an attempt to steal it, but I caught the rod before she could claim her prize. I knew she was a "heavy" and after getting a good hook set I relaxed and let the fish have her way. In what seemed like forever, she finally made an appearance at the opening in the ice and I guided the fat pig up to my waiting fingers.
With great excitement I ran to the nearest occupied shack to get someone to take my picture!

Location: blue mounds, wisc | nice fish buddy, is there hope on one more trip up there because i`m sorry i couldn`t make it this time.you are addicted to LBDN, it dont take but a few walleye over 26 to create a habit, and fishing memories you`ll never forget. was it the swedish meatball lure agian? i have to break the 30in. fish thru the hole, can i fish in your shack when you are down south?hehehe |

| Sure Larry, I plan to go every Tuesday and Wednesday until the season closes Febuary 28th. Let me know and we can car pool from Green Bay.
And yepper, but this time it was the smaller swedish pimple that did the trick! It actually worked twice that night but the other walleye hooked the lure on the side of the ice hole and twisted free...
Did you get a good look at my first ever big walleye picture on the net? A close look? Well next time I get my mug in front of a camera I hope somebody reminds me to zip up!
Heck, not even the most self-centered pro-fisherman can beat that for shameless self-promotion!!!

Yes! No! I mean it wasn't that kind of business Larry!!!
What really happened was the shack was so warm I had taken all these warm clothes off and when I caught that fat pig all I could think about was Dale 'Klinski screaming that I caught another fish and didn't have a picture!
So after this fish was on ice I jammed into my warm clothes and ran over to the next occupied shack to get someone to take a picture of me with the fishog.
In my haste I didn't finish the job! AARRGG!!
Since this is my debut picture on the web, can't help but think of the what I will do for an encore....
