| At a weigh-in with the suspense of an Alfred Hitchcock movie, Ted Takasaki couldn't come up with enough weight to edge Wayne Butz out of the lead. Ted could only manage 13#, while Butz came through with a bag weighing 28# to take first place and a check for $85,000.
Waynes partner, Chad Wertepny edged out Flo Swank to win the Co-Angler first prize and a check for $15,000.
While the lead changed hands in both divisions as the weigh-in went on, Ken Schoenecker walked off the stage the moment that he saw what Butz was carrying. Even more surprising, was the way Butz came to win the tourney. While spinners had been the mainstay, and the only technique mentioned during the entire 4 days of competition, Butz confessed that some of his biggest fish today, and some of his best fish during the week came jigging a yellow jig with a piece of crawler in 7-9 feet of water on various pieces of structure. That change in technique, and untouched water, gave up the fish that Wayne needed to get to the top of the leader board.
Tom Keenan finished 9th, but took home The Angler of The Year title.
Here's how they finished-
1-Wayne Butz-109#1oz and $85,000.00
2-Ted Takasaki-107#12oz and$32,000.00
3-Ken Schoenecker-100#12oz and $23,000.00

6-Bill Ortiz-92#6oz and $8,400.00
7-Ross Grothe-91#12oz and $10,500.00
8-Paul Devoss-89# and $6,900.00
9-Tom Keenan-80#12oz and$8,500.00
10-John Schneider-78#7oz and $9,000.00

| I meant to post more weigh-in pics, but couldn't beat the 20 minute edit limit, so I'll post a few here.
Let me say that I enjoyed covering my first tournament, and to the Pros that took the time to take me on the side and say "Thanks" for the coverage and writing, believe me, it was my pleasure to meet you, to talk with you, and to be able to call you my friends. You know who you are. Just doing my job, but it was a pleasure.

| You're welcome. I'm looking forward to doing more.
It was an awesome experience, and I learned as I went along.
Today a couple of the pros thanked me, and it really meant a lot.
I was running around like a puppy, not sure where to go, where to stand, affraid to ask people to wait so I could take pictures. I think now that my feet are wet, I kind of like the feel. Now if I could just download and upload the pictures faster, I could get them up right away. I'll just have to do some events with Sworrall and learn some more tricks.
Thanks,
Beav | |
