Kicker motor

Just wondering what everyone thinks is the perfect size kicker motor? The size of boat would be 16 1/2--19 foot. I am thinking anything from 6hp-9.9? Any other tips or ideas?

I think your right on. If you have the 19 footer, and glass, you'll want the 9.9. If you have a 16-18 foot boat, it will be lighter, and you'll be fine with a 6 HP on up. If you want power trim and tilt, you'll want the 9.9 Pro Kicker.

A T8 would fit you fine.

T8 was a good kicker when it first came out, because nobody else made a dedicated kicker. The Merc ProKicker has one upped the competition, IMHO. Smoother, more HP, quieter, smaller, and a better Tilt system than the Yamaha T8.

I wish Evinrude had something even close, but they don't. Yet, that is.

Brian, can you explain to us why the T-8 is better than any merc ever made?

Thanks

Well, they always run, they don't break constantly, they don't take forever to start, and my favorite part is that they actually have good speed control.

Yamaha's have to run longer than all the other motors. It takes them longer to get there!

I'm actually looking for a new boat next spring and I'm more than a little confused over all the motor choices. Yamaha makes 4 strokes, 2 stroke v-max series, Evenrude makes both, not sure what Merc even builds these days. I could really use some help. I'm looking at a 19 foot Walleye boat (undecided yet) with a 150-200 and a kicker. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Mercury offers the Opti Max series, a direct injected 2 stroke, and the Verado, a seriously agressive 4 stroke. The kicker options from Mercury are all 4 stroke, go with the Pro Kicker in my opinion.

Evinrude offers the E Tec, a direct injected 2 stroke. No 4 strokes there in the main power, and word is a new kicker in development may be a 2 stroke as well.

Yamaha offers the HPDI direct injected 2 stroke, and a 4 stroke model for main power. 4 stroke only on the kicker there.

Suzuki offers a full line of 4 strokes, no 2 strokes there.

If you are looking for a 19 foot boat, take a hard look at the Tuffy 1890. I can't wait til I get mine. Soon, right Steve?

Thanks guys for all the info, I currently have a 16 1/2 footer, but am possibly looking to upgrade to an 18-20 ft. model. I can get away with trolling with my main motor now which is a 50 horse 4 stroke, but am not sure if that is the best thing for the longevity of the motor. They told me when I bought it that because the oil and gas are seperate that it would not harm the motor to troll at the low speeds? If I go to a bigger model, I will certainly move up to a bigger motor and will definetly have a kicker on it.

Same here, Big Smelt. My G3/Yamaha is available and I can save you at least $15,000 on the price versus a new one. My boat will be going back to the G3 factory soon to make sure everything is working properly and will be available only after the factory staff goes through it. It'll be like a brand new boat to the new owner with all factory warranties applying. Email me at [email protected] if you're interested.

Just a word to the wise, Unless you can spell out EXACTLY what the differences are that make one product better than another, then you should not say anything at all. It sounds like a argument from the sandlot, (whine) mine runs longer and betterer (whine) and don't break but don't ask me why.

That old pot shot crap from you has to end should you really care much about your future fishing sponsorships.

And it isn't even winter yet. Sorry I missed that one, as most of you know, we really try to keep the unecessary negative commentary to a minimum.

Thanks for the offers on the boats fellas, however I am not ready just yet to trade up to a bigger model quite yet. To many sticks in the fire right now, just trying to get all the info I can when the time comes(which is hopefully soon).

I have a Mercury 9.9 Big Foot, that works really nice on a 17' boat, but i would say that would work great on a bigger boat too.

Don't overlook the Honda 8 and 9.9 for a kicker. Several years ago I fished with a guy who had one. I was very impressed with how smooth and quiet it ran and how easy it started. Now I have one too. I have been running it for 6 years now without any problems, super engine.
