If you like my reports and the scatter brained ideas and modifications I come up with, stick around and read this report and look at the pictures. I you hate me and all my ideas and posts about brand name products, and the way I modify them, then you might as well click right off this report now, because you sure as hell are not going to like this one after all the recent uproar.

Remember the new Streak Freaks I modified (picture included) into my version of a Meat Freak? Well, it got a good test run today on the Saginaw Bay. I ran the 2 I recieved from Dave Storm all day long, in some very tough conditions. So tough in fact I tried to talk the clients into not going out at all this morning. I put these cranks through their paces with speeds to 3.0mph and tight turns that would send any crank whipping to the top, and they stayed down and ran great. Now, did they work? OH YA........ they worked all right. In fact I was shocked that we did as well as we did after a week of blows in all directions. The very fist fish (picture included) came when I only had 3 rods out, and hit the Clear/Black modified Streak Freak, and nearly swallowed the the whole crank from back to front. Of the next 10 fish we had on 7 more came on the only 2 modified Streak Freaks I had out. We ended up keeping 6, loosing 2 and tossing back 3 under size fish. The biggest was a little over 24 inches. I do love when a plan comes together.

Wade.

I explain in detail how I made the Meat Freak on the post with the same name. There easy enough to make, only glitch is waiting till the Streak Freaks hit your area to buy the main component.

Dan program must be working I see. Looks good are you putting a crawler on the rear hook? I know you mentioned before about putting a piece on the bottom treble hooks do you do that to these freaks also or just the tail hooks? Keep the usefull info coming. Going to modify a few lures for the river losing too many on the Saginaw to the stumps. Losing a few jigs is ok jigging up eyes, but these lures @ $4.00 a pop is too much, got to get the brain a thinking on recovery.

Glad to hear the new lures were a success. I like the look of those lures/mods from your first showing of them.
I also was out on the Bay Monday. Found the flat water (<1' waves) to be a nice change compared to the sustained "multi footers" we've experienced lately.
I was running some new cranks from Rapala. You all know the "Shad Raps", well now they've come out with "Minnow Raps". Longer, more smelt/alewife profile instead of shad style. "Hot Tiger" and a "Bleeding Olive" were the colors of choice for me. Four fish in the box (as usual, I was fishing alone) with my largest being a 22" four lb. fatty.
Fished just off the north/northwest corner of the dumping grounds.

Lonnie.

Welcome, and Good to see ya on this board. I was hooking a 1/2 a crawler to the belly hooks of the plane crankbaits. But I hook these crawler just to the 2 hooks I tied in as the modification. The crawler gets hooked in the tip of the nose with the first hook behind the crank and behind the heart with the second. The walleye was the culpret that shook him off in the net and made it look like I hook the crawler to all three hooks.

Glad to see you here as well, Whale.

I started yesterday up close in 12 FOW and a 1/2 mile inside the end of the Crib Intake tube. Trolled north along the Crib tube and out into 17 FOW, where there were fished stacked (high and low) like it was mid-summer. 90 back on all lures and 2.5 mph was the ticket.

Dan,
The eyes look rather silver/white. Is that the normal color you pull out of the bay or is have they been dead a while and lost some color?
Take care,
Jim O

Nope, they were fresh from the cooler and 4 were still kicking when they hit the knife. The suns reflextion may have played a small part in their appearence. Our fish are (for the most part) whiter than most I've seen and caught from other places. They get a bit more darker/yellow once they hit the rivers during the spring of fall, or lay in the dark under the winter ice for a while. But few (I've ever seen) get real dark like the Canadian walleyes do.

I have to admit, I saw the new "Minnow Raps" at the ICAST show in July, and I too thought that they looked very nice. The body itself reminds you of a Shad Rap, but it is very much more slender and slightly "sexier" to use a term that I often use to describe a nice body shape. I am wondering how the swimming action is, as it will be different than a Shad Rap, due to the lip placement and body length.

I had designed a similar shaped lure (a longer and slender version of the "Lightnin' Shad" lure I designed for Storm in 1997). I never got the chance to prototype it, but, it sure was a "SEXY" lure shape! I am sure that the "Minnow Raps" will catch fish too. Rapala also introduced a small plastic jointed minnow in the Storm line "MinnowStick", I think it was called, and a couple of fat bodied cranks called the "Big Bass" and "Big Bass Square", these look like Rapala baits, though to me (design-wise). Most in the Storm line was soft plastics addtions.

These Minnow Raps must be "SUPER NEW", unless they're called something else, as I don't even see them listed/pictured on Rapala's own web site.

Thank's RichFish.

Huh....They look interesting all right and are marketed under the name everybody used for them. Wonder why they are not listed on Rapalas web page or even for sale on BP? So where did everybody who has them pick them up? I guess my next question is, how short can I buy them and how deep their rated for. I like the #7 size/length of the regular Shad Raps and their diving depths for river night fishing. That particular size imitates best the mature size that the fall/early winter baitfish are in the river during that season.

If it come in a bigger size sure would be a good night time trolling bait for the Saginaw River and Bay. Rapala has some decent glow in the dark Shap Raps too. Dan when does the night time trolling start around the lighted bridge pilings?

Baydog.

There are a few key things that signal that trolling river night bite. And don't overlook fan-casting in tighter lighted areas if you see a lot of baitfish working any particular spot. And always try to be curtious and respectful of the guys casting from the banks. So far we are all friends sharing the same resource at night on the river. For lack of good spots, it would not take much to spoil that. If I see a spot is being pounded I stay away and cast in or troll out far enough not to impede on the bankies. But the main key after all my years fishing that bite, seems to be water temp. Once the river gets to 38 degrees or below, get thee to the water.

They are for 2007 but some stores have them out already.
They are MR9
Depth 5'-11'
3 1/2" 5/16oz.

a #7 lip on a streched out to 9cm minnow body.
9 colors.
They have been in my hands for 5 weeks now.
Just not in the water yet.
But this coming week I will see how they run.

Dan - Gander Mountain here in Flint has 'Em. Picked one of each color up - haven't had a chance to get them wet tho. I'd think the dive curve will be the same as the Shad Raps. Should work well on Our nite time "Ninja" runs, specially the "Bleeding Olive Shiner". Bob

Thanks Guys.

These lures length and diving credentials sound perfect. And Bobby, shoot me an e-mail with the Flint Ganders number. Its my mission this year to experiment and find a few other cranks besides the Shad Rap, that works when trolled on the river. I got Ruff Guys, Frenzys, XPS shads and a few others all lined up to be tested when the bite gets right.

there is some guys selling minnow raps on ebay. Sounds like it may be a new hot bait, a good split between an orginal and shad rap.. I wish, well hope they make them in size 11 - 13 and for a long shot 18's doubt it thoe.
